Additionally, we're talking about extremely fucked behavior from a progressive candidate who apparently, now we are learning, had a reputation for being (and I'm putting this lightly) a fucking prick groomer of interns, and was powerful enough to ensure silence and/or complicity for years. YEARS.

1. It takes an army of folks to make sure that what they're getting down to is cold, hard facts. The evidence, to me, looks pretty unshakable.

2. It started with victims willing to go on record, who also needed to be willing to stick all the way thru the process, which is painful and repetitive

Take a look at the CNN sourcing and fact-checking on their Swalwell article. Look at how many extra people they contacted in order to corroborate claims. They viewed screenshots, called parents/husbands/friends/colleagues. They viewed TV footage and interviews, & more. Two things worth pointing out:

Seeing a lot of hostility towards indie journalists who'd long heard rumors of Salwell's abuses but didn't report on them, & I'm sorry, but that's not how journalism works. This isn't sitting on a story for a book. You can't report w/o sources. You can't out victims who aren't ready to go on record.

hey, remember Toronto's Crack Mayor, Rob Ford? It was a similar open secret that he was a cocaine fiend for *years* before the news ever came out. You can't just report "yeah everybody knows he does coke." You need someone willing to go on record: he does coke, I've seen him do coke, etc.

I hate to break this to you guys, but for anybody who seems to think that there’s some weird timing here going on or something like that and this is not real. This is all in writing. He did this in DM‘s and text messages and so forth and it is very very very real.

And survivors of sexual assault & harassment have so many (very good) reasons to not come forward. They know thr reputations, job prospects, social networks & more are at risk when they tell the truth about the (usually) more socially powerful predator, with few to no consequences for the predator.

Also, if you've heard 3rd-hand about something, and the victim didn't want to come forward, the amount of steps you can take in response are limited. Even warning people can run into very sticky legal situations if you're not careful.

I worked with multiple separate journalists for half a decade to get MINOR coverage of one of the most open-secret predators in medieval studies (extremely niche high profile) bc some of us weren’t victims of physical abuse or direct *enough* harassment and even that wasn’t enough on record

In this case many of the women accusing Swalwell explicitly said that they only went on record when they were approached by journos and realized that they weren’t the only victim. No one ever wants to be the first one to put their head above the parapet

I have very much made people at the organization aware of this and they have not done anything about it.

it turned out their ex-girlfriend had a restraining order on them for stalking, this had been reported in the press, and said organization had hired them anyway to oversee junior fellows. they are in this position to this day.

that said, in one case where I had directly been told the person was an obsessive stalker who had made the life of somebody they were in a position of power over miserable for a year, not only did everyone I mentioned this too who had worked at that organization know who I was talking about but ...

also what 'everybody knew' in practice often means '40 percent of people knew' or even more commonly '70 percent of women and 20 percent of men.'

(And exactly *what* they know also differs)

one of the very, very few stories I have had to kill because we couldn't stand it up legally involved sexual misconduct at one of the biggest NGOs, because literally nobody would go on record because the culture of said NGO is *so* toxic and vindictive.

That said, there's a big difference between 'why didn't this person break the story' and 'why did this person *endorse the candidate they had a pretty good idea what an abuser*'. very different things!

I think a lot of people here are way underestimating how difficult it is to break a sexual abuse story *even when everybody kind of knows it* unless you can get victims on record. it is very, very hard.
