One of the ways protests work is by sheer numbers. It takes a lot of people to block a city, ergo a lot of people feel strongly about an issue.

When 11 fascists with massive vehicles block a motorway it presents a disproportionate picture of the level of support.

This is the only gripe I have with greenways. They're great amenities, but that they come at the cost of potentially reopening old rail lines is probably a net loss imo. (Assuming they were ever going to open them again which... You know...)

Blame Ryan Tubridy's granddad, Todd Andrews, who made sure Ireland's rail network was not only decommissioned, but the tracks dug up so it could never be recommissioned. Car culture was injected forcibly into Irish life in a way that can't be undone.

Cold War competition led to some positive results because it was understood that "winning" involved delivering a superior way of life, and being seen to do so.

A competition between cliques of oligarchs to acquire wealth and influence for themselves has no such positive externalities.

In my industry (film and TV) our union contract mandates extremely high overtime rates for shoots that go over 15 hours, and the idea is not that this is a bonanza for greedy workers but a painful penalty for mismanaged sets designed to discourage them from working people to death.
