Since 1973, Irish agriculture has received net transfers from the EU of close to €40 BILLION, dragging the entire sector out of poverty.

Doubly sickening to see a recipient of this taxpayer largesse lecture anyone on “looking after our own people first”

Had a taxi driver yesterday said the same. He also said that women weren't fit to be surgeons or shouldn't be involved in pro sport Oh and Irelandand Britain should get together and shut the door to foreigners. Had to hold the wife back. I just start laughing at these clowns. Shout them up

In the US, a similar argument (“we need to fix problems at home before we start spending money on other countries”) led to the destruction of USAID. The money spent on food aid by USAID all went to American farmers as, essentially, a government subsidy.

I think the problem is that you've got farmers big enough to be spokespersons that they can speak out both sides of their mouth when they need to. either claiming to represent the poorer small farms, while lobbying to have subsidies disproportionately go to the larger businesses
