A powerful man sexually pursuing a young woman who works for him is oppressive. It immediately limits and reshapes her future to her detriment, whether she is physically forced into it or not. It’s coercion either way, and that is why it’s so wrong. It’s an abuse of power.

I’ve seen a lot of people struggle to grasp this even though it’s pretty obvious why. I’ve seen people say the young woman in question should just quit, which makes it obviously why this act is oppressive. It leaves her with no good options.

This is why these forms of sexual harassment and abuse at scale work to reinforce men’s dominance. If the woman’s “best” option is to quit, then this pattern of behavior can and IS used to keep women out of certain industries and positions of power and spheres of influence.

I grew up in xtian/cult circles where men couldn't be alone w/women at work and women should be home, anyway.

I remember realising, as a young teen, that these guys were basically saying "I will r*pe you if I am ever alone with you".

it's just so funny, an entire generation was like "we must raise our children towards a fairer, kinder world" and as soon as their kids got old enough to actually try to build that fairer kinder world they acted like it was some huge mystery why all the young people weren't bloodthirsty war boosters

To the people claiming space travel & solving issues on earth are mutually exclusive:

Contrary to public perception a huge % of pregnant teenagers in the 1990s were impregnated by adult men. The younger they were, the larger the average age gap between mother and father was. Fixing teen pregnancy was in part a clampdown on statutory rape. That's what conservatives want to reverse.

Computers do not understand nuance, context, and relevance—the things alt text is needed for. And I do not believe this can possibly improve, at least currently, because of what a computer intrinsically IS.

The most destructive intersection of alt text and AI isn’t that the former is being used to train the latter.

It’s that people are really excited to use AI to produce alt text, which it is generally very bad at, and expect blind folks to be grateful for it, even though it’s shit.
