This whole race has been a vivid demonstration of why top two is a terrible system. California would be better off simply going back to the traditional electoral system like most states use, and I say that as a dedicated hater of the usual model. Top two is uniquely worse.

swalwell can't win now, both for moral and party politics reasons and flat electoral ones โ€” he will not win. his ~15% (for those not from here, crowded field, he was favored to win) will winnow if he sticks around but we need to know where it goes, we need him out of the conversation immediately

I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.

I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee

even a regular staff abuse story! everyone knew about Klobuchar being the worst boss on the Hill before she ran for president but nobody could get it on the record until then, and the juiciest stories still haven't been put on the record.

Keanu is great in this so far. Diaz and Bomer are both charming and annoying. I don't understand why David Spade was cast in this. He's fine but (so far) hasn't done much that's interesting with the role.

Watching Outcome tonight and it feels like two entirely different movies poorly stitched together. Jonah Hill keeps giving himself this interminable scenes that derail a really sweet drama about an aging g actor grappling with his past asshole behavior.

Man, we have the same conversations every time a major story like this breaks. Itโ€™s exhausting. It is SO HARD to publish a story about gendered violence for a whole host of reasons, a main one being that victims (rightly so!) donโ€™t want to talk.

The Fourthwing series is still hugely popular in my library, and the checkouts are split pretty evenly between teen girls and boys (and adult men and adult women).

I find it kinda funny as a high school librarian how many parents I see complain about not being able to find "boy books" for their sons while I have plenty of boys checking out all kinds of books, including ones with romance and girl protagonists.

I wrote about the klan in CA in my book Hidden History of Napa Valley, and yeah. Being anti-Catholic (and anti immigrant and pro-prohibition) were key talking points for the klan here as well. Napa didn't have enough Black people to get worked up over, but we had A TON of Italian immigrants.

Champion of the Rose by Cat Aquino and Dominique Duran! A Filipino fantasy set in a world inspired by Spanish conquest-era Phillipines.

The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass, by Leslye Penelope. Her historical fantasies are great, so I will eagerly follow her to fantasy set in 1999.

Politicians have been promising high speed rail between SF and LA longer than I've been alive. I'll believe it when I see it. But I would bet a hundred bucks we'll get that before we get a 400 mile long tunnel. This is a toddler's idea of genius.

The Grapevine is nearly a mile above sea level. You want to put a tunnel through that? Outta your minds.

.....you can't build a massive tunnel under 300 miles of farmland, a mountain range, and delta marshlands, not to mention two major metropolitan regions with millions of people. Even if possible, the cost would be astronomical.

The show isn't excusing her or approving of her. It shows us the complexity of human existence and lets viewers sit in that discomfort. We all work with people we hate and who hate us, and we rarely get to call them out. We're all victims of the system, but that doesn't mean we're equally impacted.

Monica from The Pitt is a great example of this. I can't stand that bigot, but she's also killer at her job. She trained Dana - which explains soo much about Dana's behavior as a charge nurse - but she's also disdainful of women of color. She leaves with a hug, not a condemnation.

"Good drama is often just complicated people doing stuff."

Yes! It's OK to question that too! Did they do a shitty thing? A weird thing? Why'd they do THAT?

But I guess I struggle with the idea that this a) can't be enjoyable from a storytelling pov and b) we need to bang a gavel by episode's end
