Monica from The Pitt is a great example of this. I can't stand that bigot, but she's also killer at her job. She trained Dana - which explains soo much about Dana's behavior as a charge nurse - but she's also disdainful of women of color. She leaves with a hug, not a condemnation.

Also more great casting, for me, as I had warm feelings for her from somewhere (A Little Princess?) which were later undone...

The actress did a great job with that character. As much as I loathe her, I totally understand why Dana called her in at that moment. And, we donโ€™t know where she was on Danaโ€™s list of ultimate choices, just that she was an available choice who could do the work without computers.

I really hope she gets some award nominations from this. That so many people had had such a visceral reaction to her character is noteworthy.

The show isn't excusing her or approving of her. It shows us the complexity of human existence and lets viewers sit in that discomfort. We all work with people we hate and who hate us, and we rarely get to call them out. We're all victims of the system, but that doesn't mean we're equally impacted.

What I have learned is that people are not necessarily interested in the story the storyteller is trying to present to viewers. They are interested in the perfect self-insert character who completely represents their views on everything with no ambiguity whatsoever.

This character has barely had any lines and yet we know SO MUCH about her, about her beliefs, about the way she moves in the world.
