1980! If you want to avoid romanticizing your youth when figuring out “what’s changed” in culture and such, it’s good to know which cultural trends predate your youth.

I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.

I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee

If I never have to read some person saying "what happened to innocent until proven guilty" about why some guy should still be elected to one of the most powerful positions in the country despite numerous sexual assault allegations it will be too soon

I find it kinda funny as a high school librarian how many parents I see complain about not being able to find "boy books" for their sons while I have plenty of boys checking out all kinds of books, including ones with romance and girl protagonists.

And this podcast is a little old - pre-Covid- but what we're learning now with the shingles vaccine is it reduces your risk of dementia.

So there's a chicken pox -> dementia pipeline.

Anyone who has ever reported a story about sexual abuse knows it’s way worse than what’s actually written. Because what’s written is just what is unimpeachable.

I won’t be surprised if there isn’t a lot more and not just about Sawell.

I'll block them momentarily but I'm so sick of people making/sharing AI animal videos. It's so incessant and unnecessary.

you not gon have an ocean no more because you wanna make fake videos of animals doing the shit they already do.

STOP. ✋🏽

This is why institutional journalism matters; one needs institutional resources to fend off legal attacks.

Cont.

That’s part of the mockumentary format. Same for reality shows. Someone is asked about what just happened, to EXPLAIN it. So when viewers accustomed to this encounter a scripted show that has a documentary look and feel to it, maybe they are expecting an explanation that never comes?

I have one more theory: wait, one more theory: “The Pitt” isn’t a documentary but it is shot like one

Younger viewers are accustomed to mockumentaries like "The Office" and "Abbott Elem” where the shows DO explain what we're watching via those 4th wall breaking single-person interviews

The soaps were a great training ground for young TV viewers! Slightly out-of-bounds for some, so when you got to watch, it was a bit subversive. Something you shared with the grandmas & aunties (by birth or example) in your life. Moral complexity, good vs. evil, sometimes bad escapes punishment.

"Good drama is often just complicated people doing stuff."

Yes! It's OK to question that too! Did they do a shitty thing? A weird thing? Why'd they do THAT?

But I guess I struggle with the idea that this a) can't be enjoyable from a storytelling pov and b) we need to bang a gavel by episode's end

TY for reading, Alex!

Oh man, the shipping is a whole other thing that I just can not wrap my head around. This is not that kind of show! Yeah, Robby's a messy fuck boi (info that's mostly left in the background) and Javadi had an adorable crush, but otherwise?????

Not to in any way be dismissive of shippers, because ship what you want as long as you're not hurting or attacking anyone. But! The Pitt shipping (shpitting?) is one of the biggest areas where fans go hog wild, interpreting characters *walking past each other at work* as romantic moments for fancams

This is a great piece as usual from Nina that delves deeply into how fandoms interact with a show and morph and/or misunderstand (in different ways) what it's about, though it doesn't touch on what I find the most bananers part of the Pitt fandom: the shipping.

I’m seeing Pitt critique weekly in a medical newsletter I read. One opinion piece was how orthopedic surgeons are not like the “orthopedic bro” character. Well, yeah, he was a 5-minute character in a season-long show.

This is really good. And it's important, because it's not just about vocal fandoms, it's about how influential those styles of response are becoming outside of fandoms.
