"Using your phone in a theater that requires you to use your phone doesn’t make you a jerk, it just makes you complicit in a braindead business model."
Read @davidehrlich.bsky.social on the sheer horror of QR codes at the once-mighty Alamo Drafthouse.

It's sadly true.

Absolutely mad that they’ve decided to sacrifice the entire point of the Alamo Drafthouse chain. The thing it’s most famous for, that made every country wish they had one: no talking and no phones. What the actual fuck.

Both hilarious and horrifying. My heart especially breaks for kids first experiencing “the movies” in this way.

I haven’t read the article yet, but didn’t Alamo Drafthouse originally become a thing because they protected the moviegoing experience?

I appreciate that his ultimate takeaway as a New Yorker was "go to Nitehawk instead." I do! I shall!

Missed a good five minutes of Undertone because I was fighting with the app to not charge me $75 when I was trying to order a refill on my soda.

I'm sorry- before or after the introduction of any QR code- the whole idea of eating a meal during a movie with wait staff scurrying about, even if hidden is a horrible idea. I can hardly stand people eating popcorn, I just can't imagine the hell of this place.

The last film I saw in an Alamo was "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness".
It wasn't "Hamnet", but I was invested in it.
Beside me were a duo who ordered drinks and food through half of the film. It annoyed the hell out of me. Were they there to eat or watch a movie??? Never again.

I think Mr. Ehrlich is SO RIGHT! I used to enjoy going to Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn - but now it's kind of ANNOYING!

Sad to see one of the best theater chains become a shell of its former self

It is, and all in the name of “growth.” Time and again companies get sold to people who don’t know or care what made them worth buying.
