I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.

I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee

Every time I see this photo I giggle at the thought that astronaut pulled the ultimate dad move and told the rest of his family that it was just a normal family portrait session and to wear regular clothes only to show up himself in a damn space suit.

I love etymology and this thread. But I did get frustrated that folk etymologies spring up like kudzu when the real origin is lost in the mists of time.

"Cocktail" is my favourite example. Nobody knows where it came from. There are at least three cod etymologies.

Zeus and Jupiter aren't merely divine cognates: they actually have the same name. They began as some single Indo-European "sky father" deity called something like Deus Pater (whence also the stems theo/theus and pat/patr). Zeus comes from the first bit, Jupiter the second (via 'iu-pater').

I love that the English word "sky" comes from "skyyr" (I think that's how you spell it?) because the Vikings turned up in England and only saw clouds. And that's their word for clouds or "cover". It's literally a diss on our shite weather that we use every day.

Folks in Budapest spooked ahead of Sunday's vote. They worry the mood is too calm, especially as Orban on Weds promised to transfer power properly if he loses. That's reinforced the feeling he's got something up his sleeve. Results should be clear by 11pm local. Will they be? 1/2

the position seems to be that we need more energy now, so drilling more oil is an absolute priority only opposed due to woke nonsense, but solar farms are absolute madness, i mean people have to drive past them.

In the 1980s, the UK media responded to an increase in visibility/support of gay people with a relentless, well-funded, Right-Wing campaign against gay rights, and when support went down, allowing Thatcher to bring in Section 28, the media turned around and blamed gay people for demanding too much.

This is not a bad take. If I wanted to put my hands on my food I'd have ordered a burger.

Dendrochronologists have the same feeling of uncanny disgust looking at laminate wood-effect flooring as you do looking at AI youtube ads.

Can't be in the same room. The implied timelines make them feel sick

Probably a good time for a reminder than human rights are not won through compromising with bigots, or convincing them they are wrong, they are won by defeating them. Have a look around: all the same prominent, public people who were against marriage equality are still against it. They just lost.

"To put it bluntly, an X post today receives less than 3% of the views a single tweet delivered seven years ago."
If you think it is necessary to be on Twitter to communicate your fact-based worldview, the reality is that worldview is being smothered.

I debunked the original headlines about these school guidelines when they first came out a couple of weeks ago.

But then the Daily Mail pushed this on Facebook over the Easter weekend, so I felt the need to address that too!

Like say what you will about Walmart but Walmart is functional. It is a store that makes sense. You try to buy a pack of ramen from Amazon and it’s like escaping the fucking Minotaurs labyrinth, it’s somehow become more annoying than getting in the car.

This. Not to take away from the fact that the study was methodologically flawed.

It seems obvious that the Finnish system is designed to encourage youth "desistance" rather than provide effective care. A conversion-based approach.

A French coder estimates that using Claude Code will account for 1 tonne of CO2 over a year - 10% of the average French individual carbon footprint.

We have never encountered emissions-intensive software like this, ever before (with the sole exception of Bitcoin)

This is a brilliant piece. Incentives matter and the incentives in politics lead to poor policies because voters aren’t particularly well informed, corporate lobbyists are, and there aren’t any penalties for failure.

And, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, it might start with trans people, but it doesn't end there. Bodily autonomy is bodily autonomy.

This video does an amazing job at discussing why the British trans community is so frustrated and hostile to politicians right now.

If you're one of the Labour MPs on here wondering why your mentions are always so filled with angry trans people, maybe give it a watch?
