HEADLINE: CDC posts, then deletes, data on bird flu spread between cats and people. The data which appeared fleetingly online on Wednesday, confirmed transmission in two households.

It is evident the CDC is being muzzled SO let’s talk about what YOU can do to PROTECT yourself AND your pets. 🧪🧵 ⬇️

I live in an area with a lot of wild birds. I have 3 indoor cats and we live on the 4th floor.
We've implemented:
- all basic Covid protocols used during the pandemic (vaccines, masks, etc)
- no balcony access for cats
- no outdoor shoes worn past the doorway
- MORE -->

GOOD all of this! 👏

- plastic cat proof tote to keep outdoor shoes in
- 70% alcohol in spray bottle to disinfect door/hall where we might have walked with outdoor shoes
- plus all the things you suggested above :)

I'll do my best to keep us and our furbabies safe!

Another good reason for people to KEEP THEIR CATS INDOORS! I get that you want to let your cat be be "wild" from time to time. But letting them out puts them at HIGH risk from bird flu, predators, traffic, severe weather, & other humans. I've seen too many outside cats abused & hurt.

Makes me extra upset about my neighbour’s (who are family, btw) kicking their cat out about a year ago and I can’t take her in to care for her bc my mother hates cats.

I've read Lysol kills avian flu. Does anyone know if that is true? I want to make sure i have something to sanitize my shoes if I go to walk in the park. (There are lots of geese in our local parks)

Any idea what preventative measures to take if we own birds ourselves, especially backyard chickens? I have a flock of 10 outdoors and then two permanent indoor roosters. I plan on taking them to the vet for their first checkup when I can, but I don't know if they can be vaccinated against bird flu

Open Sanctuary Project has a really thorough, animal-focused resource. Geared to sanctuaries, but great for anyone w birds. I work at a chicken sanctuary & all of us in farmed animal rescue have been on high alert/major biosecurity focus since 2022. Scary stuff: opensanctuary.org/advanced-topics-in-resident-health-avian-influenza/

I keep hearing chickens can only be vaccinated as day old chicks, but I don't know how accurate that information is

Transmission via contact with dung. So maybe disinfect the bottom of your shoes after going on walks, to prevent bringing trace materials into the home - or is that too little to worry about?

Would Windex work for disinfection?

We genearlly let our cat out for EXTREMELY SUPERVISED outside time just to eat some grass. makes him feel better and he wont eat the stuff in a pot. However I adopted a policy a few months back that if we see any dead animal in the backyard, no more outside time, and we're calling animal control.

If it's winter, have him take off the boots in case ice melt /salt is on his shoes. It can be bad for pets.

Let's not forget that the third most popular pet in America is - birds! Budgies mostly, but also these bigger guys. Don't bring them outside unless you have to. Don't give them access to surfaces that wild birds touch or poop on. Keep our feathered pals safe!

The AVMA, FDA, and I think CDC have all come out again feeding raw food. It has no proveable benefits and very proveable risks. Any positives are just anecdotes and marketing.

Some clinics will glove up to touch a pet fed raw or even ban raw food from the clinic altogether.

And before some creature from r/rawpetfood says HISS YOU ARE IN THE POCKET OF BIG KIBBLE I'm broke as hell and the best thing I have gotten from a prescription diet company is a travel mug that got the design stripped in the dishwasher. Margins on diets are slim.

You might want to look up info from wild bird rescue & rehab groups in your area. If you're feeding birds you likely want to keep birds alive & feeders and baths are a huge disease transmission point for them. You should be able to find good info on how to keep things safer & on suspected outbreaks

I recently saw a pigeon lying in the grass near my building. It wasn't walking or moving, just lying there jerking its head back and forth the way they do when they walk. It was weird. I figured it was stunned but it was there an hour later when I came back, now just lying there, watching people

A couple hours later and I came out to find it on its back, no longer moving. I didn't touch it or anything of that sort.

No obvious signs of injury or blood, no distress calls. It was incredibly bizarre.

Is this something consistent with Bird Flu? Should I be concerned and what should I do?

CDC may be muzzled, but not local or state health departments. Follow your local ones for updates. Bird flu is tracked in wastewater locally as well at least in part of the country.

What can we do if we live in apt complex where no one picks up after their dog and the complex refuses to do anything about it except send generic emails to all residents? Animal control just tells me to tell the landlord. It’s a stupid cycle.

I would just try to minimize your dog’s exposure as best as possible, especially if they have the tendency to try to put everything in their mouth when you’re on a walk. Some people even use the basket muzzles just to help with this. I’m sorry that’s such an issue at your complex. :c

For a party that goes about "common sense," you'd think telling people to be aware of a very life-threatening disease (like isn't the statistic 50% mortality) that can also affect their man's best friends if cats are affected would be logical

Yeah apparently not

so, for someone with an immunocompromised indoor cat, what would you suggest?
Mine has been undergoing cancer treatment so her immune system isn't the best. which also means that a vaccine would be a potentially bad idea.

sorry if you've already answered this, but is freeze-dried raw food safe? my cat has severe GI issues and can really only eat specific foods, freeze dried raw chicken being one of them

Canned wet food that's not labeled raw is fine. I am only answering this since a lot of people were confused if wet food is raw.
2

Freeze dry preserves viruses and doesn't kill them. I believe the brand recalled after a cat died was freeze dried raw

Talk to your vet. Anything labeled raw is dangerous for cats.

Hopefully they can recommend some other food.

Is there anything we can do about cats who are also avid mousers? All our cats are indoor cats but about twice a year we find an organ or head on the floor and I don't think I'm capable of preventing the mice from making poor life choices. They're up to date on their shots. The cats not the mice.

You’re doing all that you can and especially with them being indoor, it’s good that the main exposure (being birds) is very limited!

So it can happen! If your cat is indoors and doesn’t have much exposure especially to wild birds they should be relatively okay. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28460593/

Maybe an odd question, but...
We have strictly indoor cats, but 2 dogs that go potty outside. Been wiping their paws when they come in. Anything else we should be doing with canine family to avoid them tracking in crud to the cats? Or is that not as much of a concern vector wise?

Not an odd question at all! Make sure that you see the whole thread for the ways to protect your pets but wiping their paws off is a very good precaution to take! Also make sure they’re not messing with any birds or grabbing carcasses or anything (as a dog was known to contract it from chewing on a

i wanna add, no shoes inside the house and disinfect the soles with antiviral cleaner every time you come in from outside + store them away from pets! bird droppings carry the virus. don't let pets drink from puddles/bodies of water with bird presence. dropping are in water as well.

Trump looks to still be operating under the belief that if you don't report cases, then there are fewer cases. I predict there are going to be many preventable deaths on his hands, but it still helps to have people like you giving us the info we need to stay safe.

Hi Chise, I have a couple questions.

1. Has H5N1 been found in any swine?

2. Is a vaccine currently in development?

Thank you!

Hi! So, to answer your questions. Yes, it was detected on one pig farm last October but hadn’t spread and I don’t believe we have seen anymore cases in pigs since then. jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2828297 href="/search?t=posts&q=:~:text=The%20US%20Department%20of,likely%20facilitated%20the%20virus'%20transmission.">#:~:text=The%20US%20Department%20of,likely%20facilitated%20the%20virus'%20transmission.

Secondly, we currently have two different H5N1 vaccines stockpiled and there are others currently

Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this and list the sources.

It makes things more reliable and actionable. Often I see people claiming things making me feel I can't just take it at face value, have to verify and then... don't do anything.

Been seeing an uptick in ill cats lately at my practice, particularly with indoor/outdoor cats, outdoor only cats, or cats being fed raw diets.

Thank you for keeping up with this info, I’ve been trying to keep my vets in the loop to help treat pts and keep ourselves and our own cats at home safe!

Question: How do I explain to someone about the bird flu and how to protect themselves without them assuming that I'm being paranoid? Especially how he's a cat owner

Thank you. I have two baby girls and I don't think I can lose them to this country's stupidity. Waking up without their meows or bunny kicks would be devastating.

Of course! Listen, I have two dogs and they’re my entire world. I can’t imagine my life without them and I’ll always do what I can to keep them safe. So I figured this would be able to help everyone and their pets! ♥️

Is this an US only issue? Or does it affect EU as well? And does it affect all cats or just those which venture outdoors. Also is packed meat safe for cats? I.e when I buy packed chicken at the store, make a stew and cut a bit of the meat for my cat, is it safe?

Avian flu is considered to be world wide. And it would be those that are outdoors since it has to come from exposure from wild birds, all that’s listed in the thread, etc. also, as long as it is cooked and not raw you’re fine!

Thank you!!! I avoid raw food for my kitty since he has FIV, and this just reinforces that decision.

If the party line is that they’re pulling all comms to scrub them for DEI, wtf is even the fake justification for blocking bird flu? I suppose the virus IS sustainable and interested in diversifying to include as many people as possible

As long as you’re not directly interacting or exposed to wild birds you should be okay.
