Some new people here, so an intro post 🥳

Hi, I'm Tapani 👋 I collected 100 litres of Ugandan insects and still haven't got them sorted. Lots of new wasp species on the way, some day.

I hadn't realised the Ngogo chimpanzees had split! They are the group (now groups) just south of Kanyawara where I was.

Though to be honest, what mystifies me more than their splitting is how they managed to grow into the world's largest 200-strong chimp group, and stay together for decades.🧪

Ooh, I've seen these before! (Also: seems a good idea.)

But go and read the article itself, there are more details there! Plus ideas what to do next.

Sitten itse artikkelia lukemaan! (tästä on myös suomenkielinen, alustava versio: zenodo.org/records/15616262)

The result: 2/3 seeds grow. A lot! But only 1/3 of unripe seeds, so it can be worth trimming balsam before seeds ripen.

Then next spring and summer, just counted how many of the seeds grew.

So I spread some balsam seeds in the autumn. Finding balsam seeds was.. very easy. Also found mosquitos. 🦟

Siispä piti testata. Syksyllä 480 siementä maahan, sekä kypsiä että epäkypsiä.

Jäi vaivaamaan, kuinka moni siemenistä selviää talven. Oli siis selvitettävä!

We'd often be faced with Himalayan Balsam plants with seeds. Trim or not trim was the question.

This started two years ago from a summer spent exterminating invasive plants.

Now fully online at @bioone.bsky.social:
doi.org/10.5735/085.063.0109

Nyt jättipalsamit @anbf.bsky.social latautuivat lopulliseen muotoonsa. 🥳

Even more fascinating chimpanzee work coming out today!

Full article is here. Looks like I visited Ngogo just before and just after the first signs of the split were showing up!

Splitting is sad for Ngogo, of course, but I suspect the Kanywara chimp group will be rather relieved.

And regarding the name validation, this classic should be must read for everyone who is writing any code for handling names.

There are some really handy programs which can turn your computer screen into simulated monochrome, red-green colourblindness etc.

I use Sim Daltonism myself, makes my graphs much clearer for everyone. Stuff which works in any colour or lack of colour usually works the best in general too.

I've now reached the stage where I do a first check what the colourful graphs look like in monochrome or in colourblind.

May have to rethink these colours. 🤔

For anyone wondering, the original Finnish said "howitzers".

Finnish is still a tad challenging for Google Translate etc – I say as an occasional researcher in "parasitic sting rays".😀

Not sure about the military efficacy of the FDF latest acquisition, but the cuteness factor is high.

I was mistaken, they weren't armoured pencils after all. This is way cuter. 🐿️

Ooh, pretty!

(Sorry, you'll have to wait for when the article is published before you find out what these graphs are – partly because after all this coding I'm having difficulty remembering that myself.😎)

If your data (black) and your fitted line (blue) do not overlap, your fitted line is not fitted.

Amazing how long it took to get from picture on left to picture on right..

I've now reached the incredibly satisfying point where my fitted curve passes through the data, instead of way above it.

It is a mystery to me how this convoluted process eventually ends up producing clear, readable code. Well, relatively clear.

If only the reviewers knew what the analyses looked like before I submitted the article...

In the fresh light of morning, I've renamed one of the variables from "se" to "ci". Because log oddifying se might be confusing for the reviewer.
