The funniest part is that all of this research will result in maaaaaaybe five sentences in the overall work.

What? No, it's totally normal to have a dozen tabs on the Kalmar Union, torcs, the High Kings of Ireland, tanistry, and the etymology of the name "Denmark" open in your browser.

Also, mind your own business.

Mine was Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle," a song expressly addressed to a girl, which made not-yet-Tamsin feel a whole lot of Feelings™ she wasn't ready to handle. 😅

Yes, they did amazing things with SFX, but advancements in technology don't mean compelling art. I've read a lot about how beautiful they are, but almost nothing about how they make audiences FEEL.

In the end, they feel like a bejeweled platinum monument to the concept of "well, that happened."

What I mean is this:

The TERMINATOR movies are literally part of our cultural parlance now. ALIENS is the SF action thriller to which all other SF action thrillers are compared. THE ABYSS revolutionized how films approach SFX in visual storytelling.

The AVATAR movies are just... kinda there.

Are the AVATAR movies just flashy-but-kinda-mid seat-fillers? If so, how did they fill that many seats? Sure, the latest one is only #16 on the list, but that's out of how many thousands of other films?

And if they're so popular, why do they have almost zero footprint in our cultural conversation?

And it's not "oh, James Cameron just sucks." I'm hardly a fangirl of his, but the dude directed and wrote (or co-wrote) four undeniably iconic SF films—THE TERMINATOR, THE ABYSS, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, and ALIENS—as well as my favorite live-action anime adaptation ever, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL.

You'd think a franchise that holds 1st, 3rd, and 16th place in the top 20 list and has made nearly $7 billion would be, I dunno, more of a cultural force?

Instead, when I hear of AVATAR at all, it's always in the context of "heh giant blue elf people" and… that's it. It doesn't really go deeper.

I'm not saying this to be a bitch, I swear. I'm just always startled when I remember that AVATAR exists. I saw the first movie in theaters in 2009, then promptly forgot about it. There've been two more since then, neither of which I've seen, nor has anyone I know.

Something that utterly baffles me is the fact that that James Cameron's AVATAR movies are three of the 20 highest-grossing films in history, and they have essentially zero pop-culture penetration. Like, is there an AVATAR fandom? Does anyone even care about this story? Who is seeing these movies?

The Episcopal priest who officiated at my wife's and my wedding showed up with his husband. Lovely chaps, both of them.

Cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written and I think it’s important to credit our sources.

Y'all, I love cis people supporting us, but I'd like to see less "trans people prove gender hierarchy is bullshit, y'all are braver than the troops because you care more about being yourself than about being liked," and more "if I see you fuck with trans people I will kill you where you stand."

My copy of Cameron Reed's WHAT WE ARE SEEKING arrived today, and the opening paragraph is everything @bluejo.bsky.social said it would be.

I can't tell you how excited I am for this book. I'd have to use interpretive dance—and while my hips don't lie, they do creak. A lot. Just take my word for it?

And we can tell, people, when you don’t actually believe this. We see it in how you act even when you think you’re hiding it.

Work on yourselves.

I don’t care that some people dislike me. I’m not for everyone. But jeez, at least dislike me for TRUE reasons, even just “I find her annoying.”

When someone ascribes to me beliefs and stances I don’t actually hold, it makes me think I need a better class of hater, or at least a smarter one.

Apparently today is National Unicorn Day, which I only just learned was a thing.

It amuses me that my first thought was, “Huh. I wonder how @danacorn.bsky.social observes the holiday.”

Autumn nailed every character in this thread, which makes me want to rewatch DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOUR AMONG THIEVES.

(That's not terribly difficult, since I adore the movie, but still.)

Things that help calm the nervous system, quickly:

- Box breathing (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4, repeat)
- Immerse your face in cold water (activates mammalian dive reflex)
- Humming (stimulates vagus nerve)
- Exercise (anything helps, outside even better)
- Impeachment and removal
