Yes, they did amazing things with SFX, but advancements in technology don't mean compelling art. I've read a lot about how beautiful they are, but almost nothing about how they make audiences FEEL.

In the end, they feel like a bejeweled platinum monument to the concept of "well, that happened."

I saw the first movie once, 17 years ago, and it left almost no impression on me at the time, so I'm ill-equipped to gauge its degree of bigotry. As to whether it's more than just a consumer product, I suppose that's what I'm grappling with. Apparently there's more of a fandom out there than I knew?
