Vancouver librarian, writer, music and radio type (etc.), often worrying about mis/disinformation and AI. I block profiles that give a weird vibe -- sorry if this leads to some errors. (Opinions are my own.)

The shared excitement over NASA’s recent mission compared to the general indifference to SpaceX missions speaks to the power of something seen as the product of communal human effort rather than just the ego and avarice of one obnoxious dork.

Humanity did that. Science did that. Publicly-funded research did that. Excellent universities did that. Diversity did that. International cooperation did that.

Artemis II is a perfect example of what we can do at our best.

Welcome home, Integrity crew!

So surreal to have a feed full of the Artemis splashdown, but also the horrors of detention camps, corruption, abuse, and war.

Very determined to appreciate this moment with the astronauts and the massive team of people who made it all happen.

Anyhow, I'm already going to see the Young Fresh Fellows tomorrow, so the only other thing I need now to make my weekend absolutely perfect is to pick up all the Helen DeWitt books I don't already own from some local indie bookstores.

it is the job of writers to be difficult and inefficient and it is the job of people in "facilitating culture orgs" to deal with that, and in an era of Professionalize Yourself Hustle culture, Helen Dewitt is like one of the Olde Gods rearing up to instill fear, terror, and awe

Contrary to public perception a huge % of pregnant teenagers in the 1990s were impregnated by adult men. The younger they were, the larger the average age gap between mother and father was. Fixing teen pregnancy was in part a clampdown on statutory rape. That's what conservatives want to reverse.

As the father of a middle schooler I have seen the rebellion against AI forming there — even using “that’s AI, bro,” not indicating something is literally AI, but that something is metaphorically so — it’s sus, it’s bullshit, it’s bad weird

As a non-wealthy non-US-ian high-school dropout, reading this post feels like reading a story about a duke and duchess and their dozens of servants packing trunks full of evening clothes for their Grand Tour.

(I got to university eventually, but it was nothing like this.)

Huge BDS win on cultural front

Giller Prize is no longer partnered w Indigo Books, Azrieli Foundation & Scotiabank

In 2023, comrades were arrested protesting the Giller. Then, thousands of writers & book workers refused participation.

Giller has now separated from all genocide-invested sponsors.

Tonight in the ai reading group i was reminded of something that happened in 2006 after I dropped out of college, when I was living in a run-down old house next to jb alberto's in rogers park with a bunch of dudes.

it was, as you can imagine, not clean.

Bloody hell. Researchers invented a disease, published two fake papers to see if LLM’s would ingest them and kick them up as fact — and then it broke containment and all the major AI’s bought in. Information pollution.

Did you know that in 1917 **19** Canadian MPs crossed the floor?

(I sure didn't.)

Being on ARCC's anti-choice list of MPs has raised questions about Marilyn Gladu and the Liberal Party's values. A reporter asked Mark Carney about Gladu's abortion stance - he claimed that she will vote with the government on any proposals around abortion and LGBTQ rights.

US EPA Head speaks at conference for people who wrongly claim that global warming is good for us. And spoiler, he didn’t tell them the truth, that they are irresponsible and uninformed crackpots.

A low point in the history of science, and in the annals of corrupt government.

"AI is garbage, bro, it gives you wrong answers like half the time and the other half the time makes you stupid."

Overheard a middle schooler chastising a fellow student for suggesting they use AI. Whole middle school herd started mocking the AI kid.

...We need to let these kids at the tech bros.
