He/lui/on. All opinions are my own fault.

Due to its yellowness, a friend of mine dubbed him "Orconzola", so this is now his name forever.

One more finished model, a million new things I tried for the first time. The most notable were blending contrast paints, and the crackling on the base.
Biggest mistake was not to undershade enough before applying the contrast paints.

If I were on a mission whose computer system required me to deal with Microsoft Outlook in space, I’d give up and go back to the slide rule

Part of me wants this to be the best April's Fool in history. Part of me wants it to be real.

This is the original sin of higher education.

(So many) students see University as a away to access better paid jobs.
Universities see students as income.
(So many) professors see teaching as the price they have to pay to be allowed to do research.

Learning is almost never discussed.

Big win of the week: I had @gevero.bsky.social try out the traditional Florentine #Lampredotto 🀀
(The stand in Porta Romana changed owner some time back, but the new guys tuned out to be good.)

Do I know anyone here with experience in laser ablation? I have a VERY stupid question to ask πŸ™‚ πŸ’‘

@jacopobertolotti.com decided it is time to justify our presence at the Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics! Flexing classical field theory with Feynman diagrams πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« at #PlasmonicaSchool2026!

#PLASMONICAschool2026 has started today in Arcetri! This morning we had πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« Francesco Monticone (@cornelluniversity.bsky.social) delving deep into the subtleties of light-matter interaction fundamentals and @jacopobertolotti.com (@exeter.ac.uk) guiding us through the intricacies of optical scattering.

When I was in year 3 they moved us to a much uglier but brand new building on the outskirt of the city (where having a lab was MUCH easier). I've never been back, and it is weird to now being the professor instead of the student. Even just for a summer school.

I haven't been here in 20 years.
When I was a student, Physics at the University of Florence was in this old, beautiful villa on the hill of Arcetri (not far away from Galileo's villa).

These cross terms are what we usually call "extinction" and are the result of the interference between the incident and scattering fields (and the reason why you get a "shadow" behind the scatterer).

So the quantity we measure is proportional to |Eα΅’β‚™ +Eβ‚›|Β², which is the sum of the Poynting vector of the incident field, the Poynting vector of the scattered field, plus the cross terms.

In most cases of interest, the modulus of the Poynting vector is proportional to the modulus squared of the electric field (which explains why we often that a shortcut and just talk about |E|Β²).

If we were able to measure directly the field (as we can do in the microwave regime) we could happily stop here, but in optics we can only measure intensities, and the intensity is defined as the time average of the modulus of the Pointing vector.

Imagine to illuminate a small object with a beam of light. If the object is small the scattered field will be essentially a spherical wave, and the total field will be the incident one plus the scattered field.

Scattering VS Extinction
In #Optics, the concepts of scattering and extinction are closely related. So closely related that many people tend to confuse them.

in 10 years age verification will be so entrenched as the status quo that saying age verification is bad and ineffective will get responses like "well what do you propose, *not* have age verification?" like it's a foregone conclusion and was always there

Food for thought for conference steering committees.
