No oil or gas tankers have transited the Strait of Hormuz since the ceasefire was struck yesterday, the four vessels that transited were carrying dry cargo. -NYT/Kpler

I'd post more, but it's like incredibly bad for everyone in civilian critical infrastructure defence right now. Like fantastically unstable and bad.

There's something a bit poignant about a Bluetooth device failing to connect to another device right next to it when they're the only Bluetooth devices for hundreds of thousands of kilometres around.

I’ve been describing supply loss from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as an “air pocket” moving through the normal flow of oil out of the Gulf

Helpful map from JPM highlighting when that air pocket will “land” in different major consuming regions: Asia this week, Europe next, N America two more

CENTCOM told me Iran keeps hitting their high-value assets so I asked how many they have and they said they just go to the Pentagon and get new ones afterwards so I said it sounds like they're just feeding high-value assets to the Iranians and then INDOPACOM started crying

While we're paying more at the pump, fuel importers are making almost nothing.

MBIE's own data shows the diesel importer margin has collapsed to near zero.

NZ is 100% import-dependent. When there's no margin, either prices rise (a lot) further, or supply doesn't come. There is no third option.

Just to be clear, the fossil fuel crisis isn't about city people's commutes. We have solutions for that, go use them!

The crisis is how to be moving all the *things* people everywhere depend on, from their source, to their destination.

Shipments, deliveries. Harvest. Processing.

Not sure who is behind it, or exactly how accurate it is, but via someone's screenshot I discovered someone has made an Aotearoa Fuel Reserves Monitor dashboard.

The figures look broadly similar to what has previously been announced, and say they're based on interpreting MBIE's data.

Iranian officials probably watched Trump try to humiliate the Japanese Prime Minister, and decided that now would be the best possible time to offer them safe passage.

We could be a few months away from every major Asian economy paying for oil in Yuan to guarantee safe passage.

We often speak of "Nine nines" of uptime (99.9999999%) as being a goal for a system; on the latest Oxide and Friends we talk about a subsystem that had exactly that uptime for Oxide -- and how that wasn't nearly enough. youtu.be/zUwmc_-SLFg

😔 You’re right, it was a mistake on my part to expose patient Katie Yarbrough to almost 200 grays of ionising radiation instead of the small x-ray dose she needed. I apologise for that.

☢️ Radiation can still be fun, though. Would you like to hear some more cool radiation facts?

It is *fascinating* to me how quickly some people have gone completely from “we all must work in the office! human collaboration is vital and only happens in person!” to “I can replace all these pesky people with chatbots!” Definitely some commentary there about our society and who gets to choose.

The NZ Herald article about the "Escalation Levels for Fuel Response" apparently announced in Aotearoa today suggests about 50 days supply currently held locally.

Which is better than I had feared, but not as good as I'd hoped (or IEA requirements of "90 days").

I'm sensing the Aotearoa (2024) National Fuel Plan (by NEMA/MBIE as a Civil Defence document) did not fully consider the scenario of a major *world wide* shortage.

Apparently 40-50 days fuel held locally, and rest (of 90 days) is "option to purchase" 😬
