I'm imagining an emerging technology that enriches workers and is based on stolen corporate patents while also driving up the cost of private jet fuel. How quickly would that technology be regulated out of existence and its creators imprisoned?

People rage that the Vatican has so much precious old stuff but in 500 years that precious old stuff is going to be all of the LEO jerseys and other crap this guy gets given all the time.

In the US military, gender integration had essentially no effect on men's actual performance or retention, but men's perception of workplace quality changed: perceived quality rose in units with newly integrated female enlisted soldiers, but it fell when female officers held supervisory roles

Ten years ago today, in April 2016, the Boston Globe printed a satirical front page imagining a future Trump administration. The page was called "alarmist," "hyperbolic," "dystopian." But we’ve put up with so much since then it now looks like . . . a slow Thursday?

In case you think US History is safe and well-funded here in the US of A, think again—and the lion’s share of the damage has nothing to do with the current president.

What happens when you gut funding for the humanities? The available money and jobs go to what any given committee/funder/university thinks is “relevant” and you end up here.

In a country that took the humanities seriously, way more of the medievalists you’re seeking out to explain Avignon would have actual academic jobs.

Something I write about in the book is how Obama’s election suddenly leads to a revival of the notion that George Washington had been either erased or unfairly maligned, as if electing a Black man to the seat Washington first held had irreparably tarnished it.

It's one of those ways something can be so woke it comes all the way back around to reinforcing the very prejudice it claims to oppose. It's why I have no truck with the "oh ho, America can only be evil, checkmate lib!" nonsense, because it grants all the premises of fascists and Confederates.

Things that help calm the nervous system, quickly:

- Box breathing (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4, repeat)
- Immerse your face in cold water (activates mammalian dive reflex)
- Humming (stimulates vagus nerve)
- Exercise (anything helps, outside even better)
- Impeachment and removal
