Docking the tails of dogs is mostly illegal in Australia. It wasn't once, but now it is, so change is not only needed but possible.

Itโ€™s so lovely to have a dog wagging its tail. Canโ€™t imagine how much pain they suffer being cut. Apart from it being illegal!

my roommate's dog hurt her tail one day and she looked so sad about needing to keep her emotions in check. it took her a couple days to recover but things that made her wag her tail like treasure hunt (hiding cocktail sausages bits in the house) or her owner coming back from home, she looked sad

I'm personally horrified by dogs' tails being docked.

That's part of the dog's spine. I would never do it just to make a dog "look" a certain way (same with ears).

Same with declawing cats. It's not a fingernail, it's more like a finger-bone. None of my cats clawed furniture. I taught them not to.

I agree with this statement. Docking should only be done for working dogs like Kangals, Boerbels, and multiple other breeds that are actively being employed to guard and herd livestock from things such as jackals, leopards, wolves, pumas, tigers, lions, African wild dogs, bears, and other predators.
1

Seeing as these predators would gladly grab hold of and/or shred any part of the dog that they can grab hold of - said parts normally vulnerable to such things being the ears and tail.

The docking of the ears is done to protect the animal later for various reasons related to the jobs they do . Doberman for safty during a fight. Cattle dogs get their tails cut so cattle do not injure them while yhey are being herded . Docking ears and tails is not manditory but acceptable practice

There are more than 20 breeds of dogs that they have breed to not have tails . Not all shortys are Docked .

100%. Mutilating a dog under the guise of breed "standards" is still mutilation and those so called "standards" encourage it. I lost any respect for AKC a long time ago for this very reason.

I get older dogs. My first 2 Norfolks tails had been done. The one I have now was born overseas and had not been done. When I took her for her 1st Vet visit they were shocked and happy to see her tail. Beyond me why you would do such a thing. I just want a happy dog.

That practice started with the working dogs to avoid injury and provide agility.
As science has advanced, some of the myths have been debunked. People who have working breeds are less likely to alter their appearance. This practices are banned in Europe as they should be in the US.

That practice, which involved working dogs, was once done to prevent injuries when they entered bushes. Poodles, it was done for agility purposes,to enhance their swimming speed. Ear docking was also believed to prevent infections. Most people today just do it for cosmetic. It needs to be banned!

Many years ago, my ex-brother-in-law raised Great Danes. I was going to buy one of the puppies. but when he found out I wouldnโ€™t cut the dogโ€™s ears, he refused to sell the dog to me. Iโ€™ve always felt itโ€™s cruel to crop ears and/or tails to achieve a certain โ€œlookโ€.

Itโ€™s also to avoid broken tails in working dogs and hematomas in the ears in those breedsโ€ฆ.

They arenโ€™t doing it because itโ€™s cute. Breed standards stem from health expectations and precautions. The ear thing is included in pit bulls too.

I encourage you to read about origins and why

The Royal Kennel Club has banned cropped ears for at least 100 years. Just because you and the AKC think it's okay doesn't mean you're right.
1

This is a sh*tty rationalization. If your animal is so inbred that it can't function without being surgically mutilated, then you have a problem, not the animal.
0

Yeah, nah. That's all bullshit.
The stupid practice has been banned in Australia for decades and there's plenty of working dogs here.
Kelpie's and heelers run around sheep and cattle all day, every day and somehow manage to not get their tails broken.
Just looking for excuses.
1

Agreed; and dog shows are not for working dogs. Also we have far less painful methods of treating both tails and ears such that the costs incurred are unnecessary.

This practice may not be useless; but what it IS is *obsolete*.

BS - itโ€™s to make them look โ€œ betterโ€ and no other reason at all . Plenty of working dogs like Border Collies, Beagles etc etc all have the tails they were born with
1

3
Oh shut up! Those conditions don't exist now. Breed standards are crap, pure crap. Breeding for beauty and wins but not health. How about the handlers are judged on weight and body type, as well?
1

1
Also the cropped ears prevent ears being grabbed and torn when theyโ€™re working as a guard dog. Theyโ€™re working dogs and that was part of the standard.
0

1
They aren't going to listen to reason on this, unfortunately.
1

Working dogs tails are not at risk of being broken. That's ancient old wives tails. Dogs move better and are more agile with tails intact as they have better balance. Ask any ethical veterinarian. So called breed standards have destroyed working dogs, they're crippled compared to original standard.
2

I call utter BS on tail docking on working dogs. They need the tails for balance and maneuvering, Australian Cattle dogs with docked tails are ridiculous.
Ps Iโ€™m not against dogs shows per se. But docking is dumb.

Also, fuck breed "standards" that require mother dogs to get C-sections or cause long-term health problems. I like the merry disposition of pugs. We had a pug corgi mix who had a genuine nose (no breathing issue) but a cute underbite that gave her a puggish look. Change the standards.

My dog does not have a docked tail. Furthermore, due to recessive genes, it is a complete circle held proudly in the air above her butt. My job is to keep the leash OUT OF HER TAIL!

Tail docking and ear cropping keep working and hunting dogs safe while doing their jobs. If the puppy isnโ€™t going to be used for hunting/working I see no point in doing it. My sonโ€™s Springer Spanielโ€™s tail is beautiful! It has the prettiest long, curly hair!
