Soft left(ie), former Labour staffer, now 🟢 member, and a tech/climate nerd who follows US politics a lot for a Brit. He/him + šŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ.

There's something fun to me about how for all the amazing complexity of crewed space travel, the way they come home involves nylon parachutes.

Loved the NASA presenter clarifying that the crewmembers being ā€œall greenā€ is about them being fine, not about their complexion. Honestly wondering if that was because they worried some conspiracy theorists would try to use it to claim they were now aliens.

ā€œWhy aren’t college students protestingā€ stories are almost always wrong (they are protesting), omit crucial context (they were brutally punished for protesting before), and somehow suggest that 19 yr olds have more moral responsibility than elected officials three times their age

Maybe it’s not super rational, but I think I’m honestly more annoyed by swing voters who didn’t actively want all the things Trump ran on, but either didn’t bother to find out, or just didn’t believe he meant all the bad stuff. Just the towering ā€œthe stakes of this decision are lowā€ bullshit.

As much as shaming voters accomplishes nothing useful electorally, I continue to be so fucking infuriated at the voters/potential voters, especially in swing states, who went ā€œeh I guess I’ll vote for Trumpā€.

It’s a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but I remember one of the hopes I’d started to get up in 2024 was that we were finally, for the first time since 2016, going to be able to stop having to think about This Fucking Guy And His Bullshit.

I vividly remember being in a class in year 5 (like 9-10) and having learned about the Oxford comma (didn't know what it was called) previously, when a teacher tried to correct me for using it, my 9 year old self went full I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL, and I am still so proud of myself for that.

It's fascinating (derogatory) how much of British politics is just standard Boomer "Back in my day we didn't have all these fancy different types of people like bisexuals and Sikhs and autistics, and we got on just fine" dressed up in vaguely plausible-sounding language.

Finally watching it now (was dealing with a migraine while it was actually launching) and that image just made my brain go "oh this is a visualisation right? ..right" before I noticed and went "oh no this is real, fuuuck that's just incredible, look at all the fucking stars!".

Maybe you heard somewhere that the COVID-19 pandemic started with a lab leak? NO! That is NOT what the evidence shows. It was not a goddamn lab leak.
I’ve had enough. Here is what the evidence shows: it was zoonotic spillover at the market

How is it 2026 and there are *still* websites where if you try to Command+Click to open a link in a new tab, the site goes "nah fuck you, we're gonna open it in this tab"?

Just a reminder, this is happening because of a lawsuit funded by JK Rowling.

Labour could solve this by passing a simple clarifying amendment to the Equality Act to restore the status quo that was in place for 15 years.

Labour refuses, instead preferring that trans people, even kids, suffer.

Considering I've heard of people having issues with IKEA's newest smart home devices that support Matter-over-Thread, I'm pleased to say my new GRILLPLATS smart plugs (£6!), and a BILRESA switch (£3 on its own or £7 with a plug) are happily working just fine with Home Assistant via a HomePod mini.

I’m reminded that when NYT staffers signed an open letter challenging their transphobia, a big part of their argument was that what they were publishing was below NYT standards for factuality.

The NYT then threatened their reporters for the letter, and have continued printing lies in the newspaper.

The IOC has announced a trans and intersex athlete ban requiring an invasive SRY genetic test for female athletes.

In the 20+ years trans women were eligible, only one ever competed and none ever medaled. This is solving for a problem that doesn't exist.

12.7M acres of solar is is about 82% of the solar required to decarbonize the US in the Net Zero America E+ scenario (there's wind and existing nuclear and stuff in there too, but that's the solar portion).

Or we can have 5% of our gasoline displaced.

Increasingly starting to think the Unicode Consortium should establish a Strategic Emoji Reserve of a number of new emojis they keep back, that can be rolled out in conjunction with vital security updates in order to get users to actually install them promptly.

As much as I totally understand the logic of Apple leading with it (people love emojis!), I'm not sure I'll ever stop finding it funny that the release notes for their software updates always lead with how it adds new emojis if it does, ahead of it mentioning them fixing serious security issues.
