thank you in advance for your very earnest explanation

A very astute (and upsetting!) piece that touches on four scary cultural trends: 1) The demand for spelled-out moral clarity in stories 2) A growing inability to understand different types of narratives 3) The "customer's always right" version of fandom 4) The growth of fandom as a social identity.

Out of respect for people unable to watch the theatrical screening of Episode 9, please do not spoil the story for others after you see it.

In the meantime - spread the word to more theatres across the world! We WANT more people to watch this!!

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth." - Mississippi's declaration of concession, 1861

Of interest to me is the observation that being nonreligious is very "sticky." People raised w/o religion tend to STAY nonreligious in adulthood; On the other hand, a child raised by two Christian parents has a 50/50 chance of remaining Christian.

So, religiosity tends to trend downward overall.

Also, as a parent of 2, and not even the teacher to a classroom of 15-30 kids, I cannot play referee in every disagreement they can possibly dream up. There are only so many hours in a day. Don't make it MY responsibility to micromanage THEIR social relationships. Give them space to figure shit out.

in america, when something is cool the money shows up, and then it stops being cool because the money has no idea how to be cool

have to infer from this that money is the least cool thing there is

the media is now telling people to work from home to save on gasoline, immediately after their years-long crusade to tell us why returning to office is best for everyone. this isn't a gotcha, it's an example of how contradicting demands allow the ruling class to blame us no matter what we do

Listen, Kilmer family: I know it hurts. Grief can make you want to do things like this. I know you just want to see him again. But don't let people trying to make money -- namely, the living -- do this to the memory of people finally free from such things, the dead. Please let him go.

First thought (stupid): Haha wtf

Second thought (enlightened): It's actually kind of beautiful that those two people found each other

As someone who went on the Internet for the first time in the early 90’s, I fucking loved the Internet. It has given so many things in life, and afforded me so many incredible experiences.

And to see it, and technology in general where they are today is kinda soul crushing.

I love everything about the yellowed light here. It looks like the time of day where it's either just rained, or threatening to rain, and the air is still, but cool. Look at how the sunlight pours over the tops of the wheat on the right, and only illuminates the stalks halfway up on the left. 😍🌾🌥️

btw about that pixar thing, the reason why these people think having a conversation about gay people with kids is difficult is because they don't know a way to say to their kid "gay people are normal but you are not allowed to be one" without sounding like a bigot (there is a reason for that)

The unfortunate tie that binds is that, as long as we’re non-ruling-class, we truly, genuinely have no beef with any of the non-ruling-class people anywhere else on the planet earth. 99.8% of humanity is in the SAME BOAT. I don’t want to get into it with anyone else, I just want to live my life!

If I think too hard about how every horrible thing right now is completely manufactured and wildly unnecessary I don’t think I’ll come back from it 🫠🫠🫠

Once again we’re asking “Why do they hate us?” And the answer is the same: It’s not because of our freedom, it’s because of what we do to them.
