Academic librarian, sewist and quilter, avid reader, spreadsheet lover (I know who I am). She/her, Fort Worth, Texas.

TIL BVD is a brand name (Bradley, Voorhees, Day) and not some kind of acronym for... you know what, let me not speculate

every so often, I rewatch this amazing 2-minute clip of Jane Fonda being interviewed about gay rights in 1979.

her warmth, tone, and words are extraordinarily inspiring. “I hope they use me. What am I here for if not to be used by good people for good things?”

the serious answer is that we need a wholesale recommitment on the left to public higher education as a high quality low/no cost public good rather than a jobs training licensing agency.

I do not anticipate this happening.

Hey @kenmartin.bsky.social and @democrats.org, it would be great to hear from you about the homophobic posts in the last 24 hours from both @govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov and @drannieandrews.com. Is this what gay people should expect from Democrats this election cycle? Are you good with it?

Why do all the book journals have "ease of reading" as a metric? Why is that something I would want to keep track of? Am I supposed to be impressed with myself for reading hard books, or mad at the book for being hard to read? "Ooo, in 2025, my ease-of-reading average was 3.27...!" Just, what?

The community has been “shaken to its foundation,” said Monica Ramirez, the founder of Justice for Migrant Women. She and other leaders are now trying to push forward the farmworker movement and continue the work that many women — not just Chavez — spearheaded.

New: I spoke to Rev. Babs Miller, a lesbian pastor at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Austin, who has known James Talarico since he was "Jimmy." They told me about how Talarico's church formed his support for queer and trans people from a young age.

Should amoral characters pay for their crimes?

Audiences might be unintentionally pining for the days of the Hays Code, or maybe they're responding to something else.

Better article re: the #TargetBoycott

"The company confirmed to USA Today that it’s making no new commitments or reversals on its DEI policy."

and

"Black women across the country are reminding people that they started the boycott — and they’ll decide when it ends."

We've commissioned 13 reviews of books by LGBTQ folks not covered by the NYTBR under Pamela Paul ...

Many of the scientists Jeffrey Epstein courted were already well-established and well-funded. So why didn’t they all just say no? Science talked with three who did just that.

Here’s how Epstein approached them, and why they refused to have anything to do with him. ⬇️ scim.ag/40qbXnv

For @literaryhub.bsky.social I wrote about writing a book about voting during a genocide and an unprecedented presidential election year.

"I could not tune out the rise of fascism in the US, or the US’s role in genocide, in order to write my book. (How could I?)"

Since everyone is (sigh) debating if writers benefit from reading books, I dissected a passage shared as “evidence” that non-readers can write great prose: countercraft.substack.com/p/what-not-reading-does-to-your-writing
