You Will Die In This Place

So, apparently I missed Transgender Visibility Day by a few hours, but the full PDF version of You Will Die In This Place is now avaliable. You should be able to access it for free if you previously got the development preview.

Here is a blog post that I wrote with a friend titled "The GM is Dead."

It asks: If we can describe some GMless games as "GMful," how might we describe games like Firebrands?

The post is super short (4 min read), and I think we hit on something interesting despite the brevity.

I really like Oubliette on the latest KMFDM album (my vinyl copy just arrived). And not just because it's one of my favourite words (my favourite is 'languid' if you're interested). Although that does help.

I entered this on a whim last year at a point where I was close to giving up. I felt like the odd one out at times, but I made some connections with some great people and got to feature alongside some great projects. Despite my misgivings about crowdfunding, it was a very positive experience.

It's also just nice to talk about them.

It's not like.. a super complex thing and I guess not etymology.. buuuuut...

"Cyclopean" refers to the size of the Cyclops rather than it's single eye. If something is "Cyclopean" it just means it really big, nothing to do with it's eyes or number whereof.

I had so many necessary but trivial and granular things that I needed to do today. And now I just can't.

I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I.

I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee

This week @kierongillen.bsky.social spoke with my students while I’m in Philly, & then I wrangled him into helping me do a public recap/debrief — which turned into our usual digressions about our work, evil versions of ourselves, & @rowanrookanddecard.bsky.social DIE METADUNGEON.

Episode 1 will be pitching a survival horror game based around a household item (think Fatal Frame). Episode 2 is designing a TTRPG based on our favourite books.

Starting a podcast with @eerieseymour.bsky.social. We recorded two episodes today. The premise is that we each pitch our own solutions to a fun design challenge and then discuss them. Mostly narrative or game design focused.

But it was a relief just to know that I could.

I get very anxious about reading comments and writing updates, especially when things have taken longer than I thought. My wonderful editor offered to do that for me recently and it was a revelation to understand that I don't have to carry that weight by myself. I haven't taken them up on it yet.

I have so many other little projects that are basically on pause right now. It'll be nice to start working on them again.

It feels weird to say this but I'm really looking forward to getting You Will Die In This Place shipped and delivered so I can go back to working on other things. There's a responsibility that comes with having a crowdfunding campaign hanging over you that makes it hard to think about anything else.

Fair warning to anyone planning to try. It is a real cipher of sorts, but I don't know that there's actually enough text to work with to solve it. Also, even if you do solve it, you would still need to invent the class abilities.

Test print went pretty well. Needs a few minor adjustments to the design, though. Mostly for fit and finish and to make the lid pivot more robust by adding a cavity for a piece of brass rod.

"You Will Die In This Place" single-handedly justifies TTRPGs as an artform. Behold the final release of this unique dark exploratory and philosophical work, which uses game design and the language of RPGs to trap you inside your brain.

Step in.

'I should really know my way around considering that the Ruinous Library was based on this place.'
'Oh, true. Let's look at that. What was number 8?'
'Hmm, The Stone Tongue.'
'Oh, the Rosetta Stone.'

Went to the British museum today. The Ea-nasir complaint tablet was out on loan. Trip ruined (I'm lying, it was a delightful time).

I designed the 3d model, but it's based on an illustration that @shimhaq.bsky.social did for You Will Die In This Place of the Manglerwurm.

However, if you make a fan supplement to You Will Die In This Place, it's got to be like 'Haha, we got obssessed with this weird game and now we're going weird too.' or 'This is what I think Charlotte really meant. So, anyway, here's my city building game set in the Abyssal Labyrinth.'

On the off chance that anyone wants to make their own Abyssal Labyrinth dungeon rooms or something at some point, I'm making some of the parts available here. Use them as you like.

Shamelessly reposting this at a more sensible time. Aside from the addition of some 50 new pages and a minor reworking of previous parts, this version also comes with 99.9% fewer unintentional spelling mistakes thanks to the incredible work of @eerieseymour.bsky.social. No more 'descrtuctive'.

I do hope that people are satisfied with the ending. I never expected the preview to be as popular as it was.
