“As the old saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago; the second best time is today.

The same is true of throwing off the shackles of fossil fuels.”

Yes we can! A timely re-post of @connorsharp.bsky.social’s op-ed for The Post: www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/04/09/the-governments-fossil-fuel-folly/

OPINION: All up, this government’s choices have left New Zealand woefully unprepared for the current crisis, and it’s showing little impetus to pivot away from fossil fuels, despite a now overwhelming case to be made to do just that.

Great news: Auckland already has a plan for getting through a fuel crisis, and it's a great one! It just needs activating – the sooner the better.

In today's post, @connorsharp.bsky.social points out the existing plan, and how we can all get it going ASAP. www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/04/07/we-already-have-a-plan-for-the-fuel-crisis/

Learning to ride a bike is a child's first taste of independence. Cities need to honor that milestone by building human-first infrastructure that actually gives kids the autonomy to ride safely, completely protected from the threat of motorists and their oversized, overpowered cars.

#RailNews: City Rail Link testing found that any fault on Auckland’s heavily congested southern rail lines cascaded through the network, diminishing hopes for increased peak services across all lines when the new network opens.

"Invest in PT, walking, cycling & rail, and rapidly electrify the vehicle fleet. It'll save us money, shield us from fuel shocks and give us cleaner air, safer streets, less congestion, more freedom of choice. What’s not to like?"

The fuel crisis will test a LOT of long-held assumptions about transport, starting with demand & supply: NZ car travel is reportedly down by 20% already. 📉

Matt Lowrie looks at the government's response so far, and asks: what else should we be considering? www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/03/30/is-government-grasping-the-crisis-and-opportunities/

It’s doesn’t need to be permanent, just give people a taste of public transit & relief from fuel prices. Yes at the moment our supply is ok, but we need to wind back our fuel use NOW so we maintain reserves for when/if supply isn’t ok.

Instead here in Auckland we’re shutting it all down for Easter.

Here’s a great read from Matt at @greaterauckland.bsky.social putting Te Whau Pathway in a wider perspective.

Such potential for more waterside paths AND more safe on-road connections - to truly open up our city for all ages and abilities, from all angles! www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/03/26/new-pathways-whau-the-people/

How good is Te Whau Pathway? SO GOOD!😍

The newly opened boardwalk is gorgeous…and it’ll be even better when it goes all the way from the Waitematā to the Manukau: tewhaupathway.org.nz/

Such a lovely way to introduce people to the awa, the bike network—and all the different ways you can get around.💚

Yes, and – we'd nuance this, e.g. for Auckland & Wellington (already high usage/ good services), govt could consider options like:
• deep discounts for children, young people, CSC holders
• and 50% off all fares, or a lower weekly cap

...while focusing fully free fares on smaller cities and towns.

Can you imagine how many roads we could have made more resilient over the last 15 years+ with the hundreds of millions spent developing these fantasy road projects?

Does anyone still think we’re going to commit tens of $B to fantasy road projects when we have to mop up from weather events every 6 months?

It’s a story about how millions of people — locals and visitors alike — are choosing two wheels over four, and what happens when cities finally begin to give them the safe space and the bike shares to do it.
