Professor, historian, husband, dad, scouser, gobby. Author of Demobbed (2009), Browned Off & Bloody-Minded (2015), Britain at Bay (2020), Advance Britannia (2025). “Awesome but a bit boring” (RMP). Personal account.

“In only a few volumes Alan Allport has become the historian of Britain at war. This is no light accomplishment, since many very good volumes have already told this story. But I think this one is the best.” ☺️ Paul Kennedy on #AdvanceBritannia in the @wsj.com

I also suspect there’ll be a tendency to understand political change through the lens of climate fragility; Trump and populism will be seen as second-order responses to the looming environmental crisis.

I remember @doctorow.pluralistic.net saying something like the only thing people 100 years from now will think about us is why we didn’t do anything about climate change. All of the things we think are important and historic today, they won’t care.

BREAKING: Police unlawfully arrest Elizabeth Morley, aged 80, under the Terrorism Act.

Whilst being taken away for peacefully holding a sign in support of Palestine Action, she says the mass arrests are a "very stupid thing to do".

Today is National Submarine Day. During WWII, 263 U.S. Navy submarines deployed on war patrols. This image of 52 submarines in the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Mare Island in 1946 represents the same number of subs that went on eternal patrol after being lost in the war.

You've posted a very droll fictional scenario. Please select a response:
• A fact about the joke you told, the existence of which forms the premise of it.
• Correction of errors I spotted in your imagination.

Literary writing famously attracts well-adjusted extroverted people who just love spending large amounts of time in the public eye.

Re #ForAllMankind S05E03: a little self indulgently schmaltzy, but not unwarranted given the significance of what happened. But: they need to get the Titan mission going soon. The heart of FAM has always been space exploration, and the soap-opera procedural cycle of recent episodes is getting meh.

When I was in Mexico City recently I didn’t particularly expect to encounter anything WWII related, and yet WWII somehow found me all the same.
In the Bosque de Chapultepec there’s
a memorial to Escuadrón 201, “the Aztec Eagles”, who flew P-47s in support of operations in the Philippines.

Old enough to remember when conservatives thought that unmarried 15 year olds getting pregnant was a *bad* thing (and all the fault of liberal society naturally because of ‘permissiveness’)

the pope is not woke. american conservative christianity has spent the last few decades mutating into an evil doppelgänger of itself such that any conservative christian leader who says things like “it’s wrong to incinerate schoolchildren” scans as a titan of superhuman moral fiber.

Considering how much Trump would exploit American success at the upcoming World Cup I think it’s very commendable of the current USMNT to be as crap as they are.

She did come within a faulty hand grenade’s worth of blowing up a transatlantic passenger jet full of (presumably some) working class passengers who had been otherwise minding their own business. Still, cool cheekbones and all.
