If these are positions you are not comfortable with, the Catholic Church is probably not for you, and you should look elsewhere for spiritual sustenance.

Furthermore, recent Popes have been very clear and consistent on Christ’s teaching regarding the dignity of human life. The reason it opposes abortion is the same reason it opposes bombs being dropped on civilians. These are established positions that, barring new insight, will not change.

The dogma of Papal Infallibility only pertains to “ex cathedra” declarations made by the Pope on issues of faith and morality. Leo has made no such declarations.

That being said, the Catholic position on what determines a just war has been in place since Augustine and Aquinas.

A couple things:

The Pope is not perfect, nor without sin. He can make mistakes, and not everything he says has to be assented to by the Faithful. For example, if he said today that every Catholic should cheer for the White Sox, it would be very ok for people to say, “no thanks, Padre.”

While I understand the concern, this would be a disappointing choice. Leo should follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who returned to Poland and faced down the Soviet Empire within a year of being made Pope.

Meanwhile, the Pope is out there like Lebowski telling everyone to abide in peace and love…

Just in case you weren’t already sure that Hegseth is a religious fanatic on par with anything you might get from an Islamic fundamentalist.

Add that to a Kahanist state in Israel and the Twelver Ja’afari Shia Islam of Iran, and you’ve got the recipe for Holy War.

2023 Election Result was UCP 52.6% vs. 44% NDP. Believe NDP lost the election by about 2000 votes. So this isn’t a great number for the NDP, but it’s not insurmountable. At the same time, when people start sensing a loser, you become a loser. NDP current strategy isn’t working.

American aid has dried up. Europe's aid is being held up by a Putin stooge. Canada has the power to finance Ukraine's self-defense: so let's do it. www.thestar.com/opinion/star-columnists/canada-can-come-to-ukraines-rescue-with-seized-russian-cash-what-are-we-waiting-for/article_a121d9f2-eadc-4e57-a366-49b75ec4be5b.html

Liberals a week ago: the CPC is a dangerous party full of anti-vaxxers and transphobes who love MAGA.

Liberals today: We’re a big tent party! All are welcome!

Not gonna lie, this was exactly how I felt about things until @michaeljanz.bsky.social gave me a good explanation on how things work. Yes, you get a $700k luxury condo. But now that lot may hold two or three families instead of one, which frees up space down the line. It really is trickle-down.

The majority of Canadians honored the social contract during COVID. We stayed home. We got our shots. Many of us lost loved ones. Many of us are still living with the effects of the virus. And how is our government repaying us? By rewarding an individual who spread lies and undermined public safety.

⚠️ Israel expands its annexation of the West Bank:

34 new “settlements” were approved by the cabinet

“This marks the largest single approval of settlements by any cabinet to date. Until now, 69 settlements had been approved across numerous decisions; this move brings the total to 103 in one step.”

I am by no means a fiscal hawk, but I’m so sick of seeing this City toss money at project after project while they can’t even maintain what already exists. And no, not everything is the fault of the province.

Polls are all over the place, too (well, they all show overwhelming majorities opposed, but vary considerably on how overwhelming). I’ll believe that the higher-end support numbers are accurate when I see actual referendum results reflect it.

“It wasn’t all bad news for the pro-Canada side…”

Yeah, because the overwhelming majority of Albertans aren’t interested in separating. Despite the click-bait headline and the dogshit framing, it’s not even remotely close (73% vs. 27%).

I have zero issue with this. It’s exactly what’s supposed to happen at a university. But I’ll note that Reid was one of the people who lost their mind when the U of A gave David Suzuki an honorary degree, the sum total of which is giving a speech to students at convocation.

There is no ceasefire in Lebanon. Israel has been bombing Lebanon non-stop since last night. If anything Israel is expanding its war on Lebanon.

You are being lied to

Local media reporting that the death toll in Beirut alone from Israel’s bombardment is over 500. AFTER a ceasefire was agreed.

It looks like 9/11 on the ground.
