Behold, the noble bollards, standing unflinchingly in the face of their own certain demise, sacrificing themselves to save others. The heavens weep.

FYI there's a DC bias on the non-audio audio of this clip which means that it makes speakers click every time it is started or stopped.

Bollards have their place, but calming and slowing the streets is even more important.

Anyone help the driver pickup their phone?

It took four bollards. I hope the replacements are upgrades.

I thought it was intentional, to avoid killing drivers by stopping them instantaneously...

Ppl mad at the 2 pedestrians for leaving instead of checking on the driver... I think their dog got loose (or injured).

There was a dog w/ them on leash, & after getting hit w/ debris, they lost the leash & dog.

Dog probably ran off scared, w/ dangerous traffic nearby, so they ran after their dog.

I'd run after my dog too, rather than check on whoever almost killed them (& me). Plus, I'd assume the other ppl all around would be checking on the driver, meanwhile I would NOT assume anyone else nearby is concerned abt my dog except for me. So it's up to me to save my pup first, then I can check.

I witnessed someone get knocked over. We were all in shock and just stood there. Then we helped. Probably the same here. People are processing what happened. It's scary seeing something like this happening in front of you.

two injured pedestrians who move out of view on the right
People gather on the left and call for help
The video is only a few seconds long
I'm sure if you were there you would've instantly leapt into the smoking wreckage, sheared through the metal with your teeth and freed the driver

Oh no they waited almost thirty seconds before checking on the person that almost killed them.

They kinda worked, but better bollards wouldn't have gone amiss.

It looks like they managed to destroy them, rather than stopped the car at the first bollard.

They might have been designed to stop cars from backing in or parking in front of building doors. Probably wasn't meant to take a high speed hit. But because there was enough of them it stopped the car anyway

Proof that concrete filled metal is far superior to concrete/stone alone. One metal one would have stopped the car cold.

There was enough energy to flip the car. I think it would have taken at least two, regardless of materials; likely would have ridden up and over the first.

A "hero" bollard
@bctransit.com @translink.ca
Our 84 members would love to see at least 1 bollard installed at every BCTransit & Translink bus stop. Our friends at @fraserhealth.ca Like "Injury Prevention"

Low cost, enduring protection for pedestrians & transit users from deadly motorists.

I remember the first time I installed one in the sort of restoration part of a project and saw just how deep they were buried 😆

Digging the holes with the auger sucked because we had huge stone buried there.

Everyone's so mad no one is helping the driver that almost killed two pedestrians. At least one of them looks like they may have been hit by shrapnel. Let the people go home and change their underpants, geeeeez!

Damn, the pedestrians didn't thank the car that stopped in front of them.

It's a good thing that fourth bollard was there. It needed the first three to slow the car down.

Looks like the car went through the first three bollards like they were matchsticks. Was it really the fourth bollard that flipped the car over? Looks to me like it got flipped by the contour of the pavement.

Don't say that to public health, they'll demand you run a randomized controlled trial because you can't assume the laws of physics work the same everywhere!

Also because nothing is allowed to count until a senior MD can take credit for it.

(I *really* wish I was joking about both of those...)

? The yellow car has their hazards on obviously stopping to check, you see the light shining on the car. As for the pedestrians there, I dunno man, face your own death like that and see how rationally you're thinking in the 15 seconds immediately after.

Some drivers are struck by sudden illness, like a stroke, seizure or loss of consciousness. There's little that can be done to prevent that.

(1) the driver would have killed them and they got hit by debris and could have been injured

(2) their dog got away so they probably went after the dog, who did not almost kill them

(3) you don’t know that they didn’t call paramedics

(4) car brain!

It’s a strong, simple statement. The resonance is in its finality. There’s no room for argument, which makes the idea itself a kind of bollard.
