The EU should enlarge to Canada (and Ukraine and the UK). It would be in the economic and strategic interests of all concerned.

I don't think it would be in Canada's interest to adopt the Euro. I certainly welcome closer trade and policy ties with the EU but joining as a member state might be taking it a step or two too far.

What if the UK was brought back into the EU and then members of their Commonwealth were able to vote and decide if they wished to join under special provisions EU leadership creates?

I'm sure we can make some sort of supersystem like we already do with Switzerland, Norway and Iceland as well, if people are so hung up on the "E" part of EU.

Would that make UK a ‘naturalized’ member of the European Union if their baby, 🇨🇦 Canada, was a member? 🤭

Maybe they should change the abbreviation to E/EU and call themselves European/Economic Union!
Then they could add any country that they wanted to without any ambiguity of purpose.

Of course, while trump is in charge in the USA, we wouldn't even be considered!

I can't see Canada in the EU, like I can't see Israel in Eurovision. Maybe if they change the name.

Canada is too Americanized. At least Australia keeps close ties with the UK and European culture, and at least they watch ESC despite the crazy time zone difference.

Australia is in Eurovision too.

Canada should open a pathway to US vets and their families as well. We have expertise to lend and need somewhere to reside and contribute where the values/culture are similar...

Agree, but do we have to have the UK back just yet, can they go through their 'issues' at home, before we let them back in and not on preferancial treatment that they had last time.

From a historical perspective, enlarging to Canada would be...weird at least.
Also I don't think Europeans would agree to include a country on a different continent altogether. Defense treaties and trade contracts, sure.

From a historical perspective Canada, as a former part of the Great Britain, is a part of the European Community.

Agreed. It would be a smart move for all concerned: grow a larger, more powerful counter weight to the US.

I think very close cooperation between the EU and Canada will be preferred by many Europeans. In the EU might be a bit weird as Canada is so far away geographically, but culture wise it wouldn't be weird at all. In a "shadow NATO without the US" most definitely, we need each other.

Yes. I also feel that conforming to EU standards would be in the national interest of Canada by forcing Canadian exporters to move away from the US.

Introducing a land border with the continental US would be many things, but absolutely not in the interest of the EU

This is an absolutely worthy idea. And, as a polite nation, we would not even insist that one of the mysterious stars on the EU flag be transformed into a yellow maple leaf.

@timothysnyder.bsky.social call me naive, but I think we need western democracy to take the next step in the form of a global constitution that sits above national ones. A globalized democracy in which all adherents act as safeguards towards each other democratic health and stability

bring on the Ukraine enlargement, but full EU membership for Canada is a bridge too far - the regulatory frameworks are *very* different and adding Canada would be reinjecting a degree of neoliberalism the EU just doesn’t need!
some kind of Switzerland like affiliation would be great, though

Why do you think it would bring EU backwards? In my experience, as a dual EU and Canadian national who's deeply invested in both, I believe there is sufficient cultural and values based overlap that it makes perfect sense.

or to put it differently: EU membership would be great for Canada, but it would pull the EU itself backwards…

I agree about Ukraine and the UK, but the inclusion of Canada is more complicated. However, you can make a strong argument for including Canada in the EEA or ETFA, which would have similar effects without some of the geopolitical problems.

What specifically makes it complicated? Just curious, I'm wondering if you're thinking of things I haven't considered.

Or just wait for AMOC shutdown. Then we can walk from Kyiv past Greenland to Montreal and back.
Live off the land, hunt polar bears, ach, all that fun!
And tell stories from the record heatwaves in summers of course. "50°C in June in Lytton? Survive a summer in Paris, I say!"

I would also add Greenland and Iceland.

Let’s just rename the Atlantic Ocean the European Ocean. That would resolve all the main concerns.

Trump’s acting like a 19th century politician.
Giving, selling or trading a territory was acceptable in the 19th century just like Britain traded Heligoland away to Germany in 1890. BUT - 19th Century Imperialism and Modern-Day Rights: www.academia.edu/145201868/Helegoland_and_the_Falklands_19_th_Century_Imperialism_and_Modern_Day_Rights

I would actually like a new group of countries where if you fall too low on a stable democracy index (or are too high on an autocratic index) citizen ‘privileges’ are suspended for period of time then you’re kicked out

Hungary and Slovenia should mean that their citizens don’t get access to EU
2

Why can’t we have a group of countries where shared democratic ideals result in advantages:
- trade
- movement
- regulation
- safety net

EU being kneecapped by Hungary and where 🇷🇺 corrupts politicians with impunity is not a good model. Let’s make a new one - that can nimbly protect itself

I fully agree! The core of the EU is not free trade, but democracy. That is precisely why we are so strong (if only we would understand this fact).

Sir, with respect, this solution is not a panacea. Reforms are necessary before we even consider such an option. However, I do find the EU appealing, at least in its ethereal form.

This Canadian would be open to hearing arguments for and against. Clearly, relying on a single large trading partner that is never more than 4 years from potentially electing a demented anti-trade imbecile is not working in our favour.

Canadians are practically European anyway so let them join the EU.

Is CETA not enough? Easy visa, easy trade.
I am so, so very glad that EU's trade agreement with USA is stillborn. Especially now, with EPA undoing all the enviro protection and USA selling literally toxic food, clothes, furniture, …. Yuck.
And all their…spyware☁️🪟📱…Privacy? Not over their dead body.

I like the idea because it is a movement towards a global society. Call it government of earth and don't let countries in who are corrupt, warmongering human rights violating pos. The more countries that join, the more pressure that can be applied to bad actors.

Canada is already partt of NATO so this would not be shocking.

This could be a solution. Then we join the EU. Is that a flitter of hope I feel?

@timothysnyder.bsky.social Carney is too smart for this. Same with Zelensky TBH. EU's tolerance of bad actors, veto powers, etc. has to change first. Belgium's bullshit needs to stop as well. EU nations with little benefit have more influence than productive, forward-thinking ones.

European, the meaning of: "belonging to or relating to Europe or its people" (Cambridge Dictionary); "a supporter of the European Union or of political union of the countries of Europe or a part of it" (Collins). - For me the EU means a union of democratic countries. European democracy, you know.

I'd have to think about that as I don't know the ramifications of such an arrangement as a Canadian and allowing nations that are pro Putin into the EU has me initially saying no thank you and do you think the EU would help defend Canada from a rogue regime like the #USA?

This does not sound like a workable idea, most importantly due to freedom of movement issues and agricultural matters.

Yes, but there would need to be some changes. I would never want Canada to become beholden to small country fools like Orbán and Fico, who can derail anything.
