IMO it’s bc the heat isn’t about an affair. It’s about her job as a journalist demanding specific boundaries regarding source relationships, which his job as a football coach doesn’t require of him in return. She violated the ethics of her job in a way he didn’t, even if they’re both having affairs.

I don’t actually care about marital affairs! Monogamy is generally unrealistic for many people in the long-term & infidelity is common. That’s their business. Russini having an affair with a source she covers as part of her job is public business bc it affects her ability to do her job properly.

You don't care about betrayal and deception in intimate relationships? 🤨

You think it's ok, because it's common? So is intimate violence.

My sentiments so exactly I had a momentary out of body experience.

(Not really.)

(I mean, yes, those are my exact sentiments, but I stayed put in my corporeal frame.)

Even if it’s not an affair, there is no world in which I meet up with a source & their friends at a hotel & hold hands with them. Even if I’m profiling them & spending a day together for the story, we aren’t engaging in that kind of physical affection EVER. That alone breaks the ethics of the job.

Exactly, but I also have no idea what me letting/not letting Vrabel off the hook for his infidelity could possibly mean in practice.

Totally correct! Caveats that I'm pretty uncomfortable speculating on all of it, and if the criticism is "don't cheat" then apply it to both, but you cannot ethically sleep with sources, lol

A coach having that relationship with a journalist isn't every bit as bad?

They bear the same level of interpersonal responsibility, but the onus of a professional source relationship is entirely on the writer. “Don’t fuck your sources,” and “your sources aren’t your friends” are Day 0 j-school lessons regardless of the gender of the writer, and it’s on them to hold those.

This is it. I don’t care about anyone’s consensual sexual arrangements unless I’m in a relationship with them. I care about the ethical problems created by a journalist getting in bed with (literally or figuratively) their sources.
