They bear the same level of interpersonal responsibility, but the onus of a professional source relationship is entirely on the writer. “Don’t fuck your sources,” and “your sources aren’t your friends” are Day 0 j-school lessons regardless of the gender of the writer, and it’s on them to hold those.

You can’t cover someone objectively and effectively if you’re friends, or more than friends. It doesn’t affect Vrabel’s credibility, but it DOES affect hers, and that would be true if it was a male reporter and a female source as well. It’s on the reporter to enforce those boundaries.
