Grandparents who file guardianship petitions to forcibly remove their grandchildren from their own child should never, ever, ever, ever be believed. I have been doing this work for decades and not once have I seen a case where the grandparents aren’t the problem in this scenario.

If you are the sort of person who will do this level of violence on your own child then you should not have custody of your grandchildren. I won’t be taking questions at this time.

If the natural parent is that bad of a parent then it’s a CPS matter (not that I love CPS. But)

Like just think about it for a moment. If the natural parent is a mess, whose fault is that generally? That shit doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Sometimes I will see extremely good parents who end up with this hot mess child, but good parents still will not file guardianship petitions.

I was one of those kids and YOU ARE RIGHT
Those days “she has money” was a good enough excuse for anything

You just fucked over the few who aren't.

Nothing is always 100% the same.

And often they have the means for a lopsided playing field

The insanity of my parents + the insanity of his parents and they wondered aloud why I wouldn't leave my kids alone with any of them when they all Damned well knew why cause I ain't shy about flapping my gums when somebody's being an idjit.

I’m an outlier. I went to court with my grandmother to try to get her to be my legal guardian. The court couldn’t do it legally, but suggested my mom just let me go. She did not have to pay child support. My mom was a hot mess, my grandmother was pretty damn stable. In sure you’re mostly right

Yeah, I’m not saying that grandparents never need to have custody. Sometimes they do. But grandparents who file contested guardianship petitions to steal the grandkids…I can picture cases where that legitimately might have to happen? But I have NEVER seen a legitimate case. It’s always abuse.

There are grandparents raising their kids kids by choice? There is definitely something wrong with someone who would give up the opportunity to finally be free of the time constraints, financial responsibilities, and personal sacrifices of raising children just to fight to do it all over again 😂😂😂

My incubator has been trying to snatch up any baby in the family she can get since my brother and I were taken away 40 years ago.
I think she thinks it'll "fix" things and she can have a do-over. 🙄
She's the fucking root of the problem for my struggling siblings and their parenting issues. 😡

That said, I know many grandparents who had the decision of raising their grands plopped in their laps, and I commend them immensely for stepping up when that wasn't in their plan at all 🩷

You are wrong. I have given my son and his girlfriend every chance to step up and be good parents. Their house is filthy, they don’t have jobs, and my granddaughter is the one who suffers. Should I continue to enable the situation? What would you have me do?

You’ve given them chances, but have you given them support?

I don’t mean financial.

I can’t tell you what to do but I can tell you what not to do: file a guardianship petition against your own child.

Being poor and even having a dirty house don’t make you bad parents. CPS even recognizes this.

That is your *child*. If they still need parenting, parent them. And not “tough love”

I have some LARP friends who are fighting this exact things because their parents believe “Transgenders are too mentally unstable to raise kids”

I haven’t heard from them in 2 years because of how neck deep in court they are

Yepppp I haven’t seen this exact same thing in my work but I had a dad that took away his ex’s kids with only supervised visitation because one of the kids came out as nonbinary 🤬 that made me want to punch the judge so hard

That sucks so fucking bad I’m so sorry for your friends

And parents can have some pretty weird ideas of what constitutes their adult children being fucked up. Ideas that can be completely detached from reality.

Yeeeeppppp. And if they’re religious ideas sometimes they even have the knowledge to outright lie to the judge because they know the judge won’t understand because of “governmental religious persecution”

I have seen it a lot.

Or “because they smoke weed” and they don’t have to lie.

I feel like you are not thinking avout the ACTUAL kid, you know the vulnerable minor, and their well-being in this take.

This rings true. I brushed up against this, it was not about help. It felt like world building, batshit narrative more than caring. Empathy was impossible.
It is some dangerous shit.
(Grandparents can be great, I wish it was better)

If my grandkids were in danger by two heavy drug users or something similar and they wanted to be with us, i would ask for temporary custody until parents are clean and safe to be with. CPS is utter shyte, at least in L.A. Had to deal with them while saving someone else’s kids and their dogs.
