for the last time, when the government becomes the customer, the vendor, and the regulator, and pumps the product into public space, it's not a regular super monopoly and i am not being a dick about communism. that is literally where i think this is going.

socialism is the obviously correct model for everything from healthcare to broadband. it is not obviously the correct model for news and journalism.

the correct model for journalism is that it should lose money. network news divisions operated in the red for decades, offset by profits elsewhere. if you run news to make money, i have news: it's not news. it's entertainment.

For a long time in the US and much of Western Europe we were able to both believe that the government should support news and journalism, mainly via supporting the networks, without interfering at least too much in the content. I think that historical period is gone.

I think it depends. If we're talking about government ownership of the news, then that's not great. However, public ownership might be the way to go.

i do not think the planned economy being pointed out is anything similar to a socialist media

consider single payer healthcare

what would single payer news look like in a similar parallel? not this. this is like letting pharma run the local doctors office directly

I don't know if socialism is right for journalism, but I think the BBC (like others here are saying), NPR, and similar orgs suggest that news could broadly benefit from collective control. Socialism for the news could work imo

I think anarchism is actually a good model for social media, and possibly a broad swathe of journalism

I agree with what you’re saying but I feel the need to point out that state control isn’t interchangeable with socialism. WORKER control is the key premise and that would likely mitigate the issues you’re raising here to at least some degree

i don't know what it is. the moral arc of the fourth estate probably bends towards propaganda.

It definitely is not the way to get honest, fair, and insightful reporting. That’s where journalism dies.
