For a long time in the US and much of Western Europe we were able to both believe that the government should support news and journalism, mainly via supporting the networks, without interfering at least too much in the content. I think that historical period is gone.

yeah, i think "the bbc exists and britain has a perfectly fine democracy" was quite persuasive in the bush years but the cracks have gotten quite visible

The BBC has been weakened thanks to a lot of right wing politicians wanting to defund & destroy it, and the rise of GB news as the televisual equivalent of the Daily Mail. The BBC has made a lot of mistakes but it’s still an incredible resource that deserves to be publicly funded

It may never have been perfect but Conservatives in the UK set out very successfully to subject the BBC to right-wing and anti-Palestinian control and it very much succeeded. They were absolutely active partisans in helping right-wing Labour take over the Labour party and attacking pro-Pal activism.
