Describing how small and personal the old internet could feel is hard. There where forums that I knew every personality and preference of the people who posted on them, but not their name.

holy shit he actually conceded

folks, they tell you they’re invincible

they tell you they’re inevitable

they tell you that you should give up and stop fighting

and absolutely none of that is true

Reminder: Remove the default block on "sexually suggestive (cartoon)" posts in bsky's secret second moderation settings page!

It's on bsky.app/profile/moderation.bsky.app, not the page in the settings cog!

The internet wasn't always this way, but gradual deregulation from the 2000s onward turned people into brands and corporations into people. It's not cultural decay, it's a deliberate material campaign run by billionaires with names, addresses, and the same mortality as the rest of us.

As someone who has been Popular On Internet their entire adult life, I hope folks understand that the urge to share every personal detail and intrusive thought isn't normal or necessary. It was invented by social media companies to extract money from you. You're a person, not a "content creator."

They don't necessarily know they're maintaining the system—not consciously. But they do it anyways. They're a part of it, social cells making up a social animal spread across nations, culture, and history. That system will try to perpetuate itself, as all things do.

So many decisions that look stupid or short sighted on the surface are actually survival mechanisms—for the patriarchy. Women make money. Queers make money. But it's poisoned. Every dollar we make ultimately weakens the system that put these men where they are. They know this intrinsically

Thinking about how the extremely shredded 16-18 year old boys on the crew team were rowing to Golden because it has the perfect bpm for ergs

for no reason

The ruling class would literally rather maintain the patriarchy than make money

A long time ago I saw a documentary where a geologist said rocks evolve, but not in the way we do. We die, whereas they change shape. Mineralize. They shift without dying.

I think of concepts in much the same way. We cannot touch an idea, but that idea perpetuates itself through us.

Look at the women at NASA.

They are the ones pushing the boundaries of science, solving problems most people can’t even understand, and carrying this country forward, while our politicians right now posture and stumble through talking points.

And they are doing it all with joy.👇

interesting that when a movie with female protagonists does poorly the response is to cancel upcoming projects with female protagonists and when a movie with female protagonists is a huge hit the response is to cancel upcoming projects with female protagonists

It's not just impossible for fascists to actually have an accurate perception of their enemies, but they are unable to even perceive what their negotiations are.

They'll walk out of getting their ass handed to them and be like "fuck yeah, total capitulation" whether in combat or peace talks.

It turns out that simultaneously believing your enemy is pathetic and weak, and that your enemy is frighteningly powerful, not only fucks up your ability to fight them but also your ability to negotiate with them.

My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.
