Worked in, worked with, and now teach and study #journalism and mass communication, and I have to say it’s time for the old models to change.

@markjacob.bsky.social has a post today that expresses what so many of us are feeling: why can’t news media call a dictator a dictator?

BOOM!
South Australia's power prices have plummeted as they near 100% renewables, proving to the world that relying on wind and solar with battery back-up is possible, more reliable and costs people less.

THIS is how we avoid the next oil crisis.

One more thing that will make food prices go up: #NorthCarolina, with our beautiful blue skies and lush greenery, is so dry there’s a ban on burning things within 100 feet of a house. And that’s not likely to change soon. www.axios.com/local/raleigh/2026/04/10/drought-north-carolina-farming-water-supply-rain-dry

The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that when Donald Trump is accused of raping underage girls, Republicans only make excuses for him. But when Eric Swalwell is accused of raping grown women, Democrats say, “If that proves to be true, there is NO excuse for that.”

Some grow wiser.

The current state of American politics:

Sexual assault allegations are made against a Democrat and in minutes other Dems demand his resignation.

Trump is found liable of sexual assault by a jury and Republicans propel him into the presidency.

Unlike Republicans, when a Democrat is accused of sexual assault we Dems take it seriously.

It’s a damn shame about Eric Swalwell but if the accusations are true he needs to go. #BelieveWomen

As an academic now studying news, its influence on audiences, and how reporting methods affect audience beliefs, I can see where we’re going. We need to change before it’s too late, if it isn’t already.

at the same time as it recognizes it’s time to focus more broadly on what the constant chaos means. Put the puzzle pieces together and draw conclusions as a rule, not the exception.

Way oversimplifying there, but the news does need to change the way it works.

That worked when we could hold an underlying understanding that “news” was the unusual thing, not the norm.

Now the weird shit happens every day.

We need a different model of #journalism, one that understands and acknowledges its power to influence audiences

And editorial writers do a third kind of journalism, in which they openly opine about current events and can draw conclusions.

His experience and my own came under a model that’s been in place for decades: news reporting focuses on isolated individual facts, i.e. today Trump says the Hormuz Strait is open. Articles that put facts together and pull back to see the bigger picture are “analysis” pieces and much rarer.
