Zohran Mamdani and the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection have announced a "Click to Cancel" rule.

The rule would make NYC the first city in the nation to ban subscription traps and force companies to make it just as easy to cancel subscriptions as it is to enroll.

NYC doing what the FTC tried and got sued into oblivion over. Dark patterns are a multi-billion dollar revenue line. Companies will fight this hard. Watch for the legal challenge within 90 days of enforcement.

I wonder if this is Lina Khan who had done the same thing for the entire country and it was reversed by this criminal Congress that is entirely purchased by the billionaires.

Thank you, President Biden who got this going.

"Companies that charge early cancellation fees, make customers jump through hoops to end subscriptions or charge hidden fees are already in violation of the city’s consumer protection law, said DCWP commissioner Sam Levine...

Same should go for breaking apartment leases. There shouldn’t be fees like having to pay 1-3 months worth of rent.

...But the agency’s proposed changes, which are subject to a 30-day public review period, would “streamline” the agency’s efforts to investigate complaints and enforce the law, and allow the agency to impose fines and pursue restitution for ripped-off consumers."

City specifically, but this is banned in the entire state of California as well.

Picking up where Biden's attempt failed to materialize. I hope it gets through, and lasts!

It didn’t fail to materialize. He was sued and lost on a technicality and then trump won and let it fizzle out. Literally the same person who did this with Biden is now working with Mamdani…

Wow. A law that benefits the consumer, and not the corporation. Amazing. You do have the power of your wallet. Cut. The. Cord.

Love me some Lina Khan!

Lina Khan rolled it out as FTC head during Biden's tenure, and since the start, she has been working with Mandani's NYC admin on the same principles: benefiting customers, not big-business fat cats.

Hey @theglobeandmail.com . I'm talking about you!

They bury their "click to cancel" option past several layers and when you finally find it and 'click" , it doesn't work, and you have to call and get harassed by an operator offering optional plans, to keep us.

This could be much bigger than it might seem. If NYC can enforce it, every other city/state can piggyback and soon we have a big win for local government to rein in predatory corporations. Go Mamdani!

Literally Biden already did it nationally, but it fizzled out under Trump. Biden’s former staffer who did this with the FTC is now working with Mamdani.

California already has this at the state level, so the precedent is already there. But still great for cities to start throwing their weight around on this.

This law has been circling the drain for YEARS. It should be federal LAW!

so fucking wild that an american politician has finally cracked the code to popularity despite immense critique from mainstream media: do things almost everybody wants and would make their lives better

Question:

Could they still make cancelling harder by making enrolling harder too?

What I don't like is just about everywhere you need to use more and more apps. But you don't get to negotiate the T&C's. It's just click and accept. No choice. For instance, all banks just about have the same terms. So it's not like you can shop around.

The first city, yes, but doesn't California have this?

(I should note that it's absolutely not enforced for shit, but that's another story.)

Which is good, since Biden tried to do that nationally but Trump, of course, nixed it.

Here’s hoping they make the time limit the same as well (if you sign up and have access immediately, you cancellation should take effect immediately, too)

Excellent--this is the lowest-hanging fruit and maybe the most popular measure that any politician could launch. Should be signature move.

Biden already did it and was sued and then Trump just let it fizzle out. In fact, the person now working with Mamdani responsible for this is the same person who worked with the FTC on it under Biden.

Biden already did this and Trump let it fizzle after a federal court struck it down on a procedural issue, not because it was a bad bill www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/08/court-click-to-cancel-ruling
