my idea of economics was forever changed when this girl in ninth grade was like “your family’s rich” and i said “yeah right, my dad’s a journalist and my mom’s a teacher, do the math” and she said “my dad’s a magician”

I never felt like my home growing up was shabby or anything, but one time a kid said to me "you live in a palace." My dad worked receiving in a grocery store and my mom worked in the office of a church (not a megachurch).

Ah, so called Gods of our legends; the scientist, the journalist, the magician, and the rest. Tho Gods they were.

Ngl I definitely saw “two employed parents” as “rich” in those years

I’ll never forget playing halo 2 at a friend’s place and he just…had snacks out. And I’d just stay for dinner and eat all their food lol

I was not food insecure, loved my mom’s cooking etc. But there was an air of security and excess that I simply hadn’t been exposed to yet. Anyway this is why I studied finance in college

The public school teachers' families were among the highest wealth group in the area I grew up. The two-teacher households were untouchably rich compared to most of us.

At college, this woman shared her experience growing up “lower middle class” and as she kept talking, I realized…

…that while her family was wealthier than I could image (they were paying for tuition, had a $1M home, two 6-digit salaries), she thought of herself as being from a financially struggling home because relative to her suburban neighbors, her family was much poorer.

i was the opposite, the stereotype of the "no im lower class" rich guy because while my dad was an engineer, i thought we were poor because i went to a Catholic school where half the kids had parents who owned half of a city and my parents were constantly telling me we "couldn't afford" things

All a matter of perspective. When I went away to college none of my friends had to take out loans like I did because their parents just paid for it all. But back home, none of my friends there could afford to go at all. So I guess I was the middlest class there was.

I was solidly middle class in my small town then I went to an East Coast college with a lot of affluence and would get caught out for dumb things like not knowing what a cashmere sweater was when professor used it as an example in class. I felt (almost) underprivileged for four years.

I went on a date with a magician who emailed me and said he liked me but was mad I didn’t buy my drink (it was a $5 LIT) and I was like “sorry I’ll pay next time” and he was still angry so I asked if he wanted me to give him the money and he said yes so I asked for his address and mailed him a check

I'm bound to say, with no intention of malice, that I will not drop my guard in the presence of a magician for a SECOND, if only on the principle that anyone who focuses my attention on the hand that isn't doing anything is not my friend.

I went out with a magician for a bit. First time I saw him perform, I turned to the woman next to me & said I’m gonna let him make my clothes disappear later tonight. 🤣

The old rules were: If he asked you out, then he should pay or tell you upfront that it’s a Dutch date. I have no idea what the current rules are.
