GPUs from fs to ms @ AMD / Interests: GFX, AI, RTL / Prev: AuthenTec (Digital HW), NASA, GaTech Grad, F1 fan. Views & statements are 100% mine.

I’m firmly on the Sony Alpha train (and usually on a newer body) but I imagine the used Nikon D5 market is truly cooking this week.

"change is scary" is such a strong emotion that is makes people incurious about those alternatives.

My strongest evidence for this is the fact I keep having to explain you can charge electric cars at home.

One hopes images like this, when paired with the knowledge that everything we burn ends up in that tiny slice of gasses, would help contextualize why we need to move away from energy sources we set on fire.

One hopes. Climate communicators should make some hay of this.

I tried and tried to get my parents in the habit of always leaving their car plugged in at home, while targeting a cap of 60-70% SoC.

They can't handle it.

Instead, they let days go by, waiting for the car to get close to 10%, and then charge to near 90%. Just like their gas car.

Disappointed to hear that the DF guys got death threats yesterday.

Let's tone down the crazy in this industry. Please, everybody.

Difficult to understand how anyone (with rare exceptions) would buy a new ICE vehicle in 2026, even without these oil prices.

will the prices that went up because of tariffs now go right back down? or are we now living with higher prices on some goods because of this unconstitutional decision?

Well this made my day.

Hoping this includes restoring De minimis.

Apple implemented support for ISO 21496-1, but it's still not a comprehensive solution.

Big camera -> MacOS -> Lightroom -> iPhone: you still need to play this delicate dance to make sure the metadata isn't butchered.

For instance, paste into iMessage is a no-go. Even if you convert to HEIC.

Was a little annoyed that they still aren't supporting JPEG-XL in-camera.

Then looked into what it would take to implement JPEG-XL encode... and yeah. Makes sense why they haven't gone beyond HEIC for now.

Thankfully starting to see JPEG-XL encode IP, but it's new: www.cast-inc.com/press-releases/cast-introduces-jpeg-xl-encoder-ip-core-high-quality-camera-still-image-compression

This entire thread serves as "exhibit A" on "why you should read the actual article".

Folks, there are more than enough factual things to be mad about these days. Nonsense like this only takes our eye off the ball.

Learned Sony A7V's biggest upgrade is a new 33MP partially stacked sensor, but none of the marketing/youtubers had a diagram of it.

Luckily, I found this slide deck (full paper is also on IEEE Xplore).

3D packaging is changing everything.

Especially these days, I'm thankful to have F1 as a brain sink. It hits the spot as an uber-complex and deep thing to think about that also doesn't matter at all.

This is terrifying.

We’ve lost over 10,000 STEM PhDs from the federal workforce in a single year.

On De Minimis (RIP): something I didn't realize with its removal is that not only are you going to now be tariffed for small purchases, but the logistics company can (and will) charge the receiving party a "processing fee", of which the minimum can be over 2X the value of the actual tariff.

These new PC monitor tandem OLEDs sound neat, but I don't understand why the iPad OLED is rated for 1000 nits @ 100% window, while PC monitors are just now breaching 300 nits.

Very similar situation that back-end chip designers experienced during the transition from manual cell placement and wiring to automated place and route.

Same for hand-written netlists to synthesized RTL for the front-end.

It’s going to be OK (but you absolutely must adapt and abstract).
