Archaeology, banjos, Taitokerau, preschoolers and teens, lack of executive function, second chances, mental exhaustion, well-toasted bread, banjos. Not the real-life Indiana Jones, more a dwarfish sort of Evelyn O'Connell

Hi to new followers. I am Jono, a 48 year old consultant archaeologist/para-historian in Taitokerau, northern Aotearoa-New Zealand. Once divorced father of three boys 17, 13, 4, partner to Dr Marine Biologist who is now retraining in MRI. Owns four banjos. Lives by the beach. Grumpy old socialist.

the problem with politics remains that you can’t trust anyone who wants to be in charge. you need to pick someone at random for governor, maybe the night manager of the 24 hour mcdonalds

Fair.

Chariots and Gold of the Gods, along with that comic with the sexy aliens was definitely a gateway into archaeology as a preteen. So thanks Erich, IDK?

Just slightly resentful that this is the third time in three months that we have had to batten the hatches, fill buckets with flushing water, battery-up the torches, pull out the camp stoves etc.

I have lived on the tail of the fish for most of my 48 years and I do not like the new normal.

OMG ! This dude recorded tens of thousands of shows in Chicago in the late 80s and early 90s and beyond --

like Shonen Knife when they were playing on campus, the Sugarcubes in 1987, amazing audio treasure trove:

Simple solution to low birth rates is to learn from history. The baby boom was founded on delivering a welfare state in a unionised society with taxes effective on the wealthy, preceded by five years killing fascists and their leaders.

And he just said everything I needed to hear this week.

The oneness of humanity. Nobility of spirit. Importance of being strong and positive for our children. The value of science and remembering the good people we meet, in the face of all the shit.

Anyway, all the good stuff. Hes a good'un 2/2

Had reason to call the Regional Archaeologist today to update him on a reported accidental discovery I went out to look at.

Friend and mentor of 25 years, also classic Gentle Bahai late career pakeha who lives on his little yacht.

Business out way we turned to family and the state of things 1/2

“Acoma Gov. Charles Riley said that the pueblo submitted more than 400 public comments in opposition to ending an oil-and-gas drilling ban near Chaco Canyon, and young people went door-to-door to help older and more rural residents submit comments online.” 🥹❤️

"This 80 year old Foreign Minister wants you to know he's thinking about how you and your kids piss, shit and fuck all the time and wants legislation to ensure he knows exactly what genitalia everyone has and use that to stop people using the toilet, joining sports clubs, and receiving healthcare."

The Redcliffs land was once a burial ground of the Waitaha people, a collective name for the first Polynesians to settle the South Island in the 1300s.

The use of “hallucinate” is a stroke of true evil genius in the AI world.

In ANY other context we’d just call them errors & the fail rate would be crystal clear.

Instead, “hallucinate” implies genuine sentience & the *absence* of real error.

Aw, this software isn’t shit! Boo’s just dreaming!

One hopes images like this, when paired with the knowledge that everything we burn ends up in that tiny slice of gasses, would help contextualize why we need to move away from energy sources we set on fire.

One hopes. Climate communicators should make some hay of this.

This is quite cool. The home of Burt Silverman, who did the cover of Aqualung for Jethro Tull, among other things.

Now an intergenerational household.

Our PhD student Kennedy Orwa, who studies applications of AI to health care, was hastily deported today to Kenya along with his 13-year-old son without opportunity to speak to legal counsel.

King 5 reports that he held a valid visa that was rescinded without explanation.

I have a very specific memory of Julie Christie being quoted in the media bemoaning the lack of support for her ouvre in AoNZ, in the month before Tom Phillips was killed.

Meanwhile...

Cops fractured his skull for standing by in peaceful protest. And people in power claimed he assaulted the cops. No hell greater for those who smeared him. RIP.

I get near hourly updates on 13 and his gang of weirdos (they named themselves this, although now they are apparently the Spesh Squad) so thats something.

But 17 maintains incredibly tight opsec across his cells (football team, school friends, bio olympiad peeps, mums house etc).

17 is down in Dunedin at the Bio Olympiad and as per tells me nowt.

Dad knew all my friends when I was 17, and clearly liked bestie better than me (how we joked).

17 is a closed book. I only kno who one of his friends is cos he sang "I'm Too Hot For you" directly at 17 in the school production.

Why did I make a map of small drone attacks on civilians, and why am I emphasizing the "small" and "short-range" attacks?

Read my rationale and much more information in this newsletter post:
