God look at all that dithering on the left, you'd think that's being played on a gameboy,

Just my opinion but i dont really see the problem with the PS5 one both look completely fine to me.

Why is it bad that it’s running in a higher resolution is this just more nostalgia bias or something

Some folks like smooth pasta sauce and some like it chunky.

Switch actually wins this one because of the pixel quality. As we've learned, the smoothing isn't exactly an improvement.

Sony can’t do PSX emulation ever since the PS2 tbh

The hell???? How did they mess up on PlayStation???

It's the PS5's official emulator version vs the new Console Archives one

I dislike it so much, look at what they tried for a CRT filter

does Console Archives have the PS1 wobble?

I want the wobble.

Give me the dithered sky and mountains from PS and smushy look of Switch.

Sony went through the trouble of maximizing the resolution, but forgot to remove the full screen dithering.

Good Lord, what a gigantic failure. Improving the color depth is one of the best things you can do to improve image quality in these old games.

"Running old games at their original resolution" fans are eating so good right now! 😌

Having recently bought an Analogue 3D, played some games on it and been blown away by how much better the games looked than I remembered, I'm also a believer and an advocate now!

And also CRT filters, wow! Honestly, I used to not be a fan, and when it comes to 2D games (especially on the SNES), I still think it's mostly a matter of preference. I feel the game still look fine pixelated.

When it comes to early 3D, though, what a game changer!

I have had fun showing this to friends who unanimously say ps5 looks obviously better

People where told over decades that higher resolution is always better but now we should know it better. In my opinion Ps1 and N64 games should not be upscaled, the lack of visual information is just so ugly.

The right one feels more accurate to PS1.

Does the archives version not include an option to recreate the ps1 dither?

Why does the switch 2 version look so bad?

I can't overstate how N64 emulation lovers EXPECT the left image when playing ANY N64 console.

playing PS1 games at higher resolutions feels so unnatural cus of the clash between asset resolution and display resolution, just becomes a nightmare

PS5 misunderstood the assignment.

The switch is how the game looks on the original console the ps5 is upscaled and the mountain looks worse

It's actually insane how badly Sony fumbled the PSX emulator.

... Well, I guess it's not too surprising since Nintendo screwed up a lot with their N64 emulation over the years.

You’d think Sony might’ve been taking notes, maybe there wasn’t enough pushback against bad Nintendo emulation for them to care?

Left is cleaner, but the right feels like it’s from its era

Idk, pretty interesting to see

I'd say to watch out about the comparison image logos because Console Archives Cool Boarders is also on PS5 (meaning PS5 players can potentially get a better option than Sony's)

huh, whats going on with the background on playstation? why does it have such a visible dither pattern on ps5 but not on switch? is that dither pattern just part of the original texture and the switch version removed it, or is that somehow down to how the ps version renders stuff?

Playstation relied heavily on dithering. Not as a part of the textures, but to simulate higher amount of colours. That said, it looks a bit weird when the geometry is rendered in such a high resolution yet the dithering is not.

its weird that ps5 has the ostensibly "higher-resolution" graphics what with it not downscaling the image, but then also has this weirdly prominent dither pattern

The PS1 had a relatively low color bandwidth and used dithering to mask it. So the dithered one on the left is technically more accurate to the original hardware, but it doesn't really make sense to mix it with the high resolution polygon rendering...

Some would say the left looks better because it's clearer

some are idiots, i need the C R U N C H

I also prefer the native resolution but with a good CRT shader for max comfy.

human eyes were never meant to see beyond the C R U N C H. playing a modern port of an early 3D Final Fantasy game places a hex on you. spread the word.
