huh, whats going on with the background on playstation? why does it have such a visible dither pattern on ps5 but not on switch? is that dither pattern just part of the original texture and the switch version removed it, or is that somehow down to how the ps version renders stuff?

The PS1 had a relatively low color bandwidth and used dithering to mask it. So the dithered one on the left is technically more accurate to the original hardware, but it doesn't really make sense to mix it with the high resolution polygon rendering...

its weird that ps5 has the ostensibly "higher-resolution" graphics what with it not downscaling the image, but then also has this weirdly prominent dither pattern

I think it's just something the emulator does to 2D textures, Resident Evil is full of it

Playstation relied heavily on dithering. Not as a part of the textures, but to simulate higher amount of colours. That said, it looks a bit weird when the geometry is rendered in such a high resolution yet the dithering is not.

Although it's weird that it's not visible at all on the Switch version. Either way, I think Switch version looks better due to rendering at more authentic resolution.
