Aren't their pensions funded for the next 75 years or something too? Every corporation should be required to do the same.

I Don't get this "Postal Service" defense... its a shit service that provides 95% spam to most people. We're forced to use it, and if given the option most people would more than likely get rid of their mail box in a heart beat.

Their package tracking is never accurate, it never provides proper updates.

Many of the rural post offices are open such terrible hours that many of us can't actually check our po boxes on a regular basis.

Service is questionable at best when you're there.

Considering how much mail they damage, lose and deliver past the date promised, they don't deserve a cent.

Americans don’t understand what a public service is, because everything in that country is for-profit.
According to most Americans, USPS is communism. 🤦🏻‍♂️

When they need more money, don't they usually just raise the price of postage?

Stamps can cover cost increases but NOTHING can account for the GOP loading them down with operational costs that are DESIGNED to overwhelm their finances. It's a scam. Part of a decades long effort to convince Americans to sell the system to wealthy investors.

Anyone remember how fast mail was before 2020? That wasn't just the pandemic. Mail is much slower than it was 10 years ago and that is by design.

I almost got dinged by my landlord for late rent. What previously took no more than two days to go from one end of Brooklyn to the other took 3+ weeks this past month.

A thing that always annoys me about people who complain abt the post office or public transit “not making money” is that it ignores how much business is conducted via mail, or people taking the bus to work or go shopping or whatever. These services obviously facilitate the economy.

Plus, honestly, there’s more to a society than just its economy and that’s a good thing

Some of them want to privatize the pension fund. It's all in US Treasuries, the government loaning money to itself, and that drives certain MBAs mad.

A guy went on Joe Rogan's podcast and Rogan had to i terrupt him and disassemble his arguments against the post office.

If you get owned in a debate with Joe Rogan, your point is invalid.

THESE are the men in blue we need to support!

Want to support them more? BUY STAMPS! That money goes right into their pockets as it's a product. So If you want to donate money to these people, buy stamps. Lots of stamps. LOTS of stamps. Go to the post office and order a load of custom print stamps.

Given the orgy of money for the PD this argument is especially good as a counter. "Should the police department have to pay back those millions? With drug money and blood money? And if they are too successful they owe money because there's no crime to get money from?"

Same thing in Brazil. Conservatives love to preach about its privatization. In a continental country, the Mail plays a key role in areas difficult to reach, where no private company would go for reasonable prices

What does “debt” mean in this context? It’s not a business. It’s either funded or not. If it takes more money to run it effectively, then you give it more or you don’t.

depends on whom you are talking abt. private prison companies and defense contractors would say they are very profitable.

It doesn't *need* to make money, but the fact it *does* proves that republicans are not trying to save people money

It's an ideology that only rich people should own profit, not the public

Hurting the USPS hurts the city based black middle class. Parents who work at the USPS have put a lot of black kids through college. Removal of the black middle class is a key goal of white supremacy.

Unpopular opinion here, it running at a loss isn't an issue-that should be expected.
The issue is how inefficient it is. It is in need of a massive overhaul-many who has shipped anything with USPS can attest to how bad it. It is in need of a massive overhaul, which is it's own catch22

I think that inefficiency and insolvency is the goal for the GOP--that's why they burdened USPS with pre-payments for future healthcare, etc. The worse it runs the easier it is to make the lying-ass case that the infallible private sector can fix it.

The USPS is a business that runs a service.

The current postal service is not the original constitutionally mandated one.

It's a replacement formed on the bones of the old colonial one.

It's mostly a cut & paste job. I cleaned up an old graphic of Mr. Zip--who can't be beat--slapped him on pink with the text, and laid that poster-fold texture over it.

When people say that the post office needs to turn a profit, they never seem to put together that the only real way they could do that is by raising prices. Those profits would come out of your pocket.
1

They all know it well. And they want those price raises, they just want the proceeds going to investors, not the government.

Fire depts. Also used to be businesses. They frequently spent more time preventing other debts. From putting out fires on "their turf" and extorting people with burning homes than actually helping anyone.

And needless to say police aren't a service, they are an occupying force.

literally this. same with public transit

none of these need to be profitable

I worked for the USPS for about 4 years. It shouldn't be a for profit company but people shouldn't bitch about shipping prices going up when it's employees are severely underpaid. I met so many people with injuries developed during the years of carrying heavy parcels who were paid a McDonalds salary

Tbh most of our "bonuses" came from filing grievances towards the shitty management that sat around and did nothing. Working 7 days in a row meanwhile those shit holes would be comfy working 4 day weeks

I'd almost argue the opposite, the prices shouldn't go up because we're already paying for it. Instead, we need to quit letting capitalists gut the budget which is resulting in poorer pay and working conditions. But what do I know, I'm just a filthy commie.

Fun fact: during the numerous Canada Post strikes, I'm so rural that my dad had to start taking packages for people who lived just 30 minutes away from us because private mail carriers wouldn't deliver to them
Don't let that happen to America

There are also a lot of meds you have to sign for and show photo ID to receive. Someone else legally couldn't pick up those packages without a lot of hassle.
