There are outliers, obviously—KPop Demon Hunters, for example—but executive cowardice can be extremely powerful. The way mainstream, big-studio animation is developed, there's too much money on the line to weather too many flops. So, in the opinion of most, best to never try.

Even KPDH was -waaaay- underestimated, hence only just now getting licensed toys and shit. Man, Stevie Wonder saw it was gonna be massive!

Even KPDH succeeded more in spite of the executives than because of them, Netflix got it because Sony didn't have the confidence to release it on their own, and now Sony has to renegotiate with the creators for any sequels because they didn't bother to cover that eventuality in their contract
