reshare for alt text, republicans and rich people who want to privatize mail have been lying about the USPS and trying to push this narrative longer than I've been alive, and imposing massive financial burdens on it to make it "insolvent"

Being a mail carrier is an absolutely brutal job and most of the post office is running because thousands of hard working people just figure it out everyday. It’s going to explode at some point

Brutal, but absolutely necessary.

I feel like the USPS needs to be improved though.

This is fucking stupid. His only problem is that it doesn't look good.

On a related side note, I helped a friend put in a change of address online yesterday, and it cost $1.25!

It’s been ages since I’ve done one if those, but I’m sure it was free 🤷🏻‍♀️

Would you like to know why they charge ? (It's free if you do it on paper instead of online)

Every time I hear some idiot talk about this, I ask them when we're going to start making fire departments show a profit.

Governmental functions are not profit/loss centers. They're taxpayer funded entities, for the purpose of keeping civilization stable, secure, and moving ahead.

exactly.. are the police profitable? congress? not that they haven't been (illegally) ripping apart lots of government functions and departments this time, but be real about what's going on

Also, in retrospect, would have been a sweet place to get a job after high school. Those guys have never heard of layoffs.

Nothing I have deposited with the USPS in the last 30 years has reached the addressee. The state has sent my replacement drivers license 3 times in six months by USPS and I don’t have it yet.

USPS refused to deliver my wife's driver's license to our mailbox until I put a card inside with her name on it. I had to figure this out via trial and error. The DMV said "it was returned because you need to register with the post office" and the post office insisted there's no such thing.

The USPS has funds they cannot use because the GOP says they must FULLY FUND the retirement of ALL employees, not just those ready to retire (like every other company on the planet does!). It keeps them from being flexible in spending, say, like when fuel costs double in a week.

Burdens like the pension has to be pre-funded out to 70 years? As in there has to be money in the fund to pay the pensions of employees *who aren't yet born*?

They have to be losing some money if htey have to raise the cost of stamps all the time.

They're only 'losing money' because the GOP keeps expecting them to show profit. We still have the cheapest postage rates in the world.

In December 2024, the UK government sold Royal Mail (a 500 year old state owned postal company) to a Czech billionaire.

Now we get our mail so infrequently and late that people are missing hospital appointments, even though the letters are dated several weeks before delivery.

Sweden’s postal privatization—culminating in PostNord—cut costs but degraded service: slower delivery, fewer offices, rural gaps, and chronic losses. Market logic failed under universal-service demands, leaving taxpayers indirectly absorbing inefficiencies.

I don’t care how much it costs, USPS, AmTrak, NASA, and NPS are the coolest brands the Feds own and the need to be hyped up as much as possible.

Other rail lines should have been nationalized instead of being allowed to go bankrupt and dismantled.

The problem AmTrak has is there's no niche for long distance trains in the US. We're too big and our airline infrastructure is too good. "More expensive than an economy plane ticket and slower than driving" just isn't a good sales pitch.

Agree 100%. Fund every single one at whatever level they need.

As much as I hate to say it, the official NASA account has been endorsing the Trump administration lately.

As an outsider looking in, I'm consistently baffled by the Republican magic trick of being so incredibly pro-war / pro-army, and so incredibly anti-veteran at the same time.

Oh, it's simple: they don't like veterans; they prefer caskets. That way, they make money from the bombs and don't have to handle the ones that used them.

it's because both parts of that are anti-human, which is their overall stance

The same folks want to alter Social Security, claiming it will go broke in six years. Is it possible this too is a convenient lie to further their nefarious plans?

The USPS does cost tax payers $ but it's good money spent.

As a former postal employee let me tell you, the US government funds 0% of the postal service. They get revenue to operate through sales alone.

no, tax dollars do not go to the USPS for normal operations

Relative literally went to a hiring event the other day for the postal service. If they were bleeding money they would not be hosting job fairs to get people to fill positions that they are in need of!!! their pay rates are generous!! they have money!!!

They just hired a bunch of CCAs at my office. There is actually a bit of concern that this hiring bump is part of a back door campaign to get older more well paid carriers out and replace them with a bunch of lesser paid novices that are forced to work massive amounts of hours.

UPS and FedEx both use USPS for routes they deem non-profitable for them to handle personally. Eliminating USPS means an increase in the cost of overall shipping and/or a loss of service.

We sold off our equivalent in the U.K. and it is pretty much useless now (although still better than all of the even more privatised delivery services…)

Given that a major source of income go usps is junk mail, increasing the bulk rate would also raise revenue and potentially reduce the amount of bullshit mail we all get.

All government services are 'for profit' when you don't get to have a choice in funding them.

It's usually just for the profit of the politicians.

Also, it's possibly one of the best mail services in the world. Other countries literally send people to learn from the USPS how to do it in their home country. It's one of the few US developments to be proud of.

Could this have something to do with mail in voting?

It has all to do with mail-in voting.

I feel like authorized is poor wording, but I'm probs just being nitpicky. It's just that it makes it sound optional when in reality the constitution states that there has to be a postal service. From my understanding at least

The longer we go without letting people have a choice in the matter the more likely they'll accept there is no way to live without it.

Hopefully World War 1 will end soon so we can stop paying temporary income taxes.
