It is so on brand for Chicago that a driver hits and kills a child in a hit-and-run, hits ANOTHER child, and the media blames the child and their scooter. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/03/25/safety-of-e-scooters-questioned-teen-killed/

It’s murder nothing but murder the driver should be charged with. Lack of care and attention when driving.

That's not murder you idiot. That's vehicular homicide and hit and run.

Safety of human skull questioned as 4000lbs vehicle runs man over. We must ascend to survive in a world of cars, we gotta push human evolution to the edge to face our greatest predator.

Love how this article is about e-scooters and not the hit and run driver that took out two teens.

How fucked.

This article reads like they almost randomly cut and pasted a chat GPT summary's bullet points about scooters into the story.

was driving with my husband after sunset when two kids on a scooter pulled out between two tightly parked cars into my path on a narrow street. I braked & swerved & the kids tipped over. their mom was in the car behind me and actually honked.

gave them all a piece of my mind. mom... speechless.

This is odd, per @chi.streetsblog.org reading the police report, both children were on one scooter (the surviving one was the operator, Harris was behind her). So the driver hit two at once 😔

chi.streetsblog.org/2026/03/24/tragically-a-hit-and-run-driver-fatally-struck-violet-harris-15-on-a-lime-e-scooter-crash-report-provides-more-details-on-what-reportedly-took-place

I’ve been seeing a ton of this BS about bikes and scooters. They want to make them harder to obtain and use. Just like everything else that has threatens the oil oligarchs funding all of the fascism.

The article never mentions the safety of escooters having literally anything to do with this girl's death.

Nobody is blaming the victim in this story. But your comment will definitely make more people read the article so you’ve done a good job by pointing out something that’s not true.

If we mandated automatic 15 mph governors to activate when the vehicle is within 100 yards of a human might be the easier hurdle. No more piecemeal fights at local state and federal levels. It is the cars.

We road our bikes and scooters on busy roads all the time. No one got hit. My children did, too. Today, the problem is people driving too fast or driving while distracted. Otherwise, how do you hit a person in the road?

Eh, there's a decent amount of drivers who see people outside of cars as mere inconveniences.

Drivers have intentionally tried to hit me just to get to the stop sign or green light sooner. The last one had zero remorse as we both sat a red light after she tried to run me over.

Perhaps. Yes, it's the drivers responsibility. But as someone who lives in an area with many kids on ebikes driving very recklessly with no regard for traffic laws with many accidents, it's a problem. As kids, they take their safety for granted and it's very dangerous. Teach our children well.

When I got hit by a scooter I had a sore foot for a day. But if we get hit by a fucking car we die. Death is permanent, you fucking carbrains.

Remove the cars.

It's not just there, and not just e-scooters.
A road safety campaign here in Ireland usually means "Cyclists, wear a hi-viz vest and a helmet!"
Car-brain is a serious and hard to cure condition. It's especially damaging when found in policy makers.

OK, so yes, it's ultimately the car drivers's fault because obviously, but I've seen the way kids ride those Lime/Divvy scooters, especially around the neighborhoods. No helmets, two kids on a scooter, weaving all over the street, on their phones...

Maybe "children" shouldn't ride them.

"Let's blame the scooters instead of the psychotic motorists who run people down and murder them!"

Fucking hell, motorists are unredeemable.

If only they shook that kid down for insurance first, theyd still be dead but at least they could have got some money out of it first

Wait, I thought we were busy blaming EE-legals for everything. Is the driver here one of our local mopes?

Bringing up the irrelevant fact that some scooters can go 50mph only to implicate the scooter riders further when we know damn well a Lime scooter does not come close to that. I'd like to also mention that some cars go 200mph.

It’s infuriating and should be a stain on the “journalist” for dipshittery in “reporting.”

Lime scooters max speed, regulated by city, is 15 mph.

And cars can weigh 2+ tons.

If you know your laws of physics (particularly the properties of "momentum" and "impact force"), this is very unequal equation.

Is anyone involved in the reporting, writing, editing or publishing of this article in fact the driver who killed this child? Or the lawyer for that driver? Because that’s what it reads like.

It has been my experience that most people on e-scooters drive without any regard to the law, or their own safety. Hell, there’s almost never a day that goes by when I don’t see a pedestrian do something incredibly stupid, like make a sudden turn into a road without looking. The road is dangerous.

And I've seen a Hummer EV driver (and many others) texting and driving. Can scooter riders be reckless? Sure. Can they kill a family of four by negligence? No.

One of those is very plainly the much much bigger crisis.

Huh. Do shooting victims get blamed? Because I have concerns about the safety of firearms. I mean, scooters and e-bikes?? Really?

@chicagotribune.com you should be embarrassed for publishing this victim-blaming article. Calling this crime an “accident”, barely even mentioning the car and driver who murdered a child while focusing on the scooter. You think they would have been safer on foot somehow? Absurd.

It's not just Chicago. The so-called progressive citizens of Berkeley, Ca. (some of them) blame pedestrians who get hit walking in crosswalks, cyclists who get hit by drivers who don't signal, etc. There's something mentally wrong with driver identity that let's them kill 40k+/yr in USA but no fault
