As it's Hugo time, I wanted to talk about a category I care about, and which I think could do with a bit of extra love when it comes to nomination time - it's best fan writer!

(this is gonna be a thread of me doing hype, which I'm bad at, but that is much deserved by all here linked, pls be nice)

Tried to do another Dragon Age the Veilguard play and was disappointed by the blandness of sarcastic Rook, especially in comparison to sarcastic Hawke.

... guess I better start a new DA2 run, eh?

Amazing: we're already halfway to our first stretch goal! Thanks to everyone who's donated or shared already; spreading the word about ARB's fundraiser helps a ton!

I did not dwell in this one on a number of really nice descriptions, because it would be very easy for that to be my main point in every post. But I did particularly enjoy the paragraph that starts with a beautiful image of the dark, flooded Isengard and ends with it compared to a steaming saucepan.

It's been a while, but the next episode of our LotR reread is up, where we close out the first half of The Two Towers with, predominantly, a lot of chatter between characters.

Picked up The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord what with her being a very interesting GoH at Eastercon and all, and among other things, I’m really enjoying how warm and sometimes funny the dialogue and relationships are, and how culturally focused it is. It’s quietly just very good.

Wondering about authors who muck around with scientific and mathematical concepts, like Yoon Ha Lee and Greg Egan. Reminders / recommendations welcomed... @alasdairstuart.com? @niallharrison.bsky.social ? @chloroformtea.bsky.social ?

And the end of book 3, the completion of the Rohan section of The Two Towers.

Will some slow, careful, thoughtful reading give me more insight and interest in it? Or will I just still be like "oh... oh dear...". I hope it's the former because this project has been so FUN so far and I don't want it to suffer from my grumps.

On the one hand, gonna see ma BOI. Faramir time is obviously best time.

But on the other, much higher page count time... I just remember really not enjoying the Sam and Frodo bits. I don't like the Sam and Frodo bits of the film either. I just don't really like Sam all that much!

We've just finished our next LotR section (and I shall enjoy writing it up this evening), but that leaves us half way through The Two Towers, and me staring into the barrel of the section about which I have the greatest trepidation.

All my bad opinions are about Star Trek and music. The rest of my opinions are impeccable and correct.

(my Star Trek and music opinions are also correct, they're just bad at the same time)

Insurrection is the best Star Trek film and there is clear water between it and the next option.

Yes they fly the Enterprise with an 80s gaming joystick and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Good, and I think a very good take on it, but not perfect.

Saw Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the National Theatre tonight. Both the production and Aidan Turner were doing their best to work with deeply uncomfortable material, but alas, it did sometimes feel like they were having a little bit of a fight with the play.

It was not a small spider. It was very very squashed. Do not do this.

Have just been reminded of possibly my worst book lending story, where the book was returned to me with a spider squashed between two of the pages. The lender did not mention this.

It haunts me to this day and I think I was... maybe 14 when it happened.

The only thing on which we disagree are the sperm jokes. I am a simple woman when it comes to sex jokes anyway, but I also found the eventually-grimly-determined repetition of the same lack-of-joke funny in a weirdly abstract way. Ymmv on the sperm jokes. But the rest? Fully agreed.

This is an excellent review by @readingtheend.bsky.social of a book I likewise enjoyed (though with fewer reading of real Moby Dick behind it, and fewer academic injustices to accompany), and I absolutely buy the pandemic analogy, I think this makes a lot of sense.

Getting them to the first stretch goal would obviously be great, but I think it would be extremely neat to get them to $10k, for the "pay the editors" stretch goal. Just saying.

Anyone who was at eastercon, do you have particular favourites of the panels you attended? I'm listening to stuff on catchup while doing work inbox archaeology.

This has been a phenomenal comics series so far, and volume 3 is no exception. The genuine engagement with the ideas they set out is so satisfying to read.

ARB are a fantastic source of reviews, podcasts, essays and interesting roundups, so I really hope they absolutely smash their targets here.

Am I partisan? Oh sure. But I’d be reading them just as hard if they didn’t foolishly let me write for them too.

a) this Moby Dick retelling whips, and you should read it. also
b) not sure Alexis Hall was doing it on purpose, but this may be the Great Pandemic Novel for our genre (complimentary)

There was some lovely colour-gradient embroidery thread for sale at Eastercon, so I decided it would be nice to use it to make myself a souvenir bookmark, especially as I have some iridescent (wahey) fabric upon which to stitch it.

(ignore the colours on the pattern, that's just for visual clarity)
