Yeah there was supposed to be a new version AND a desktop steam machine but everything is on hold due to AI induced "shortages" and tariffs.

Though it is slightly hopeful that Valve is signaling they think this entire situation is temporary.

if it's any further consolation, I'm really not very happy with mine. Quite a few hardware issues (abxy buttons getting stuck, squeaky d-pad, loose spring on a shoulder button), uncomfortable form factor, super tinny sound/no EQ (why??), surprisingly buggy UI

It is honestly a phenomenal device, can’t recommend it enough. I got one right before a revision surgery and it carried me through the recovery.

It was the hardest surgery I ever did and I can look back on it fondly solely because I had a steam deck during it :3

its just a PC, a linux one, so might take a bit more setup to mod things (and some games actually easier some how lmao)

its basically a laptop in a switch shape

It's great tech but it's so much heavier than the Switch that it really aggravates my wrists. I can barely play it holding it up, I have to have it tilted on something at all times. I don't see this drawback mentioned ever unfortunately.

It's a computer they stuffed into a button'd shell, you can basically do whatever on it

Kinda need a dock for that, though, adds about $30 to the price tag

And you can set up lossless scaling to get ever more performance on it. Works like a dream on No Man's Sky but varies by game
