Annual reminder: don't spray spring dandelions with roundup or similar chemicals. One flower can be visited by 100+ bees in a day, and your chemicals will kill all of them.

Every dandelion Iโ€™ve ever dug up had a worm in amongst its roots. Worms are so good for the soil. It seems a shame to disturb their home.

White vinegar is a cheaper, safer weed killer. I use it on my brick sidewalk.
We need bees!

As a former beekeeper I can agree with this. It is disheartening to see all your bees dead under the hive because of pesticides and herbicides. It is expensive to keep bees.

I used to dislike them, but I let them bloom because the bees need an early abundant food source, then I mow them before the go to seed.

Dandelions are not native where I live, so I use my grampa weeder and yoink. I let the native violets flourish instead, and they are an incredible ground cover and host tons of gorgeous little flowers. Bee Balm and mountain mint are excellent for pollinators and will spread on their own. ๐ŸŒธ

I'm over people obsessed about lawns. Cut them high. Don't use chemicals. In the fall, mulch mow the leaves and leave them on the ground.

And find every excuse to eliminate parts of lawns as much as possible.
You can kill weeds on pavement with salt and vinegar + a couple drops of dish detergent

That's what I use for pavement and we grow (initially not by choice) a boatload of clover and always cut high so the bees still have blooms. ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒผ

I think dandelions are a small price to pay for our environment. Those little puff balls make for excellent golf practice. I feel I am re-seeding for Mother Nature & doing my part. Sod is over-rated & over-priced. As long as it's green, it's growing.

Dandelion tea is a nutritious, caffeine-free beverage rich in antioxidants (vitamins A, C, K) that acts as a natural diuretic to reduce water weight and bloating. It supports liver health, aids digestion, and may help manage blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

While humans might not go extinct, a world without bees would cause severe food shortages, malnutrition, and ecosystem collapse. Bees pollinate roughly 70 of the 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world, meaning our diets would become vastly restricted, expensive, and bland.

Just donโ€™t spray anything at all, ever. I garden in Sweden, so quite similar conditions to Canada, and have done so for 23 years on the same plot with 0 pesticides / herbicides / fungicides. The garden thrives and I never have serious issues with pests or diseases. Weeds are taken out by hand.

Plus, dandelions are the best thing for compacted soil. Allow them to naturally break up the hardpan soil over a few years and once they've done their job, they will move on, entirely on their own. Also, allow clover in your lawn for natural fertilizer (they're legumes), pollinators also love them.

Best post of the day! ๐Ÿ† Pull those weeds, burn them, just don't poison them. By the way, the previous owners of this home used round up - it lasted a few weeks but the roots go over 2' deep; within a year the grass was back. DON'T SPRAY POISON, period. I lost a dog to poison. We are losing the base of the environmental pyramid by killing insects. Figure out how to coexist or use benign things like cinnamon, vinegar, or *gasp* yank the weeds out by hand. Hell, pee on an ant mound; they'll leave.

Good advice & crucial to the health of our bees! No self-respecting or responsible human should be using that carcinogen Roundup or any other of those weed killers. If they're capable of causing cancer in humans....think what it does to our bees & other pollinators

Also, dandelion greens are delicious, Their flowers can be used to make jelly or wine, and their roots her a liver detoxifier.
So if you've plenty to share with the bees, share what you can and responsibly harvest them for yourself.
