System Shock was a commercial failure and is lauded as one of the most influential titles in gaming.

Beyond Good & Evil is a beloved cult classic that was a commercial failure.

Grim Fandango was a critical darling. Also a commercial failure.

EarthBound on SNES also failed. Still influential.

People really don't imagine how many of their favorite games are commercial failures.
Making a good game may help with sales, but it's not the main factor. And both players and devs need to realize that.

for decades as a gamer I don't think I ever saw a placeholder texture in a live game and suddenly in the space of two years there are a dozen cases of OH THAT AI WAS JUST MEANT TO BE A PLACEHOLDER
