I feel that I need to say this again, since we’re seeing so many people get “refunded my preorder” upset about losing in the Invincible VS beta: if you require the words “you win” in order to have fun, then fighting games, a genre in which 50% of all match participants lose, are not for you.

I’m not saying correlation is causation, but I find the rise of “cozy games” in which there are very few (if any) strictly defined fail states troubling for this very reason lol

That’s why I play DOTA for the fights instead of winning or losing. Also if these fighting games are anything similar it’s focus on small skills and as you develop you get better.

100%. The issue is, those “small skills” can vary from game to game, and very rarely are they touched off on in any meaningful manner by the game’s own baked-in training materials and tools.

Fighting games, and one’s performance level on playing them effectively, are powered by experiential learning. You learn only by doing, and you will make mistakes that cause you to lose matches, particularly early on. It’s an immutable fact, no amount of single player mode coddling can change it.

If you need to win in order to enjoy a fighting game, at absolute best, you will manage to reliably have fun 50% of the time. If you find your fun in the slow process of improvement, in finding where your own tactical understanding and decision making can become stronger, you’ll love them.
