Neurodivergent hyperfocus on old houses, the gothic, folklore & art (disguised as a book account).

All opinions are those of a house with rats in the attic. Don’t ask about the basement.

I think maybe we did SilentSunday wrong and this image isn’t very peaceful. It’s more Rest In Peaceful.

Second visit to the TIRZAH GARWOOD: BEYOND RAVILIOUS exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

I love her slightly surreal late paintings, which remind me a little of Leonora Carrington’s work or something from a Barbara Comyns novel. #art #TirzahGarwood

A #Caturday portrait of a slinky fellow who may or may not be an escapee from a #Poe story. Or maybe one by Shirley Jackson.

@linaforrester.bsky.social if you’re wondering about the weird house that just followed you, it’s Windsorknot from the bird app.

We finished a short story today that wasn’t about houses. In fact, there was nary a house in sight (nor castle nor cottage).

There was still decay, undeath, and comeuppance tho so this is not one of those “signs we have been housenapped” posts.

We will always want to know what’s behind the papered-over window on #FensterFreitag.

Murder? A bad renovation? People who hate nosey photographers? Which is worse?

My baby sister and my mother outside the bookshop my parents used to run in Hyderabad in the 1980s. I remember that scooter too. It was initially my father's, then when he bought a car (a secondhand Standard 10) it was used by the bookshop staff.

Our first #FindThisHouse real estate ad. It's a fine property, if you like peace, quiet, and Colonial-era code enforcement.

Writing the book jacket copy that mentions your influences is a balancing act. You want to include the most personal, but also recognizable names. Elizabeth Bowen & Barbara Comyns are our soul, but more folks know VC Andrews & Stephen King.

What do you all do?

this hits. the best dark fiction isn't about monsters outside. it's about the permission the reader gives the darkness inside to take a shape.

My Books Save Lives Act makes it clear: discriminatory book bans are a violation of federal civil rights law.

I held a read-in at All She Wrote Books in Somerville to announce this bill to fight book bans and emphasize the importance of inclusive literature.

We’re getting going slightly this morning by building “a log cabin on a mountain so high.” Of course there’s that warbling cuckoo there, that symbol of infidelity, but “she’ll never say cuckoo ‘till the 4th of July.”

Here is some wallpaper and lace for #TextureTuesday, because the state of the world is more than we can handle at this moment.

(This image comes from Bless This Art House, a book of visual art about houses, that will come out with our short story collection)

Currently wondering if “there was an old woman who swallowed an ouroboros” is a suitable metaphorical mashup for someone who keeps cycling between the same two unhealthy options to cope.

We are thinking about the solitude of writing and being trapped in a malevolent structure on #MonochromeMonday.

But also how we became an alcohol-free house while reading “The Shining” by @stephenking.bsky.social.

Today's #AskThisHouse question comes from a real person. We think. We're not sure what is real anymore, but the query concerns a real issue: decor. Thank you, @foxgloveforests.bsky.social, for asking.

And the illustrations by Brian Pinkney add to the atmosphere. This was a marvelous library sale find, tho we recommend getting the Penguin version, not this horsey Scholastic trim size.

“The Dark Thirty” by Patricia McKissack is a collection of southern Black stories about ghosts, conjur, old houses, and chicken coop monsters that the author’s grandmother told her. Tho written for 8-12 years, it pulls no punches and is dark, funny & touching.

I almost never mention my book and it perhaps isn't the kind of book this is designed for but... it did take me years!

A deep dive into how a wide range of 18th century theologies on stuff like ghosts, demons, toleration, immortality and more affected the Gothic.

Tonight’s pick is more Odilon Redon because… of course it is.

Below, I saw the vaporous contours of a human form (1896) always makes me feel that sensation of loneliness that feels like you’re losing your grasp on a little piece of yourself.
